memory cards? where do you live? id just use the laptop's hard drive. also, if you are connecting it to an amp in the trunk, id put the laptop in the trunk near it. in the spare tire area or something. also a usb sound card would be worth the money, if using amp.

good luck.

The 7" screen that I am using is touch screen, eliminating the use of a keyboard or a mouse.

Both the laptop and the screen have vga port so a simple vga cable will connect both of 'em.

i dont think he meant hardware. he just doesnt know that there are free front ends out there that work much better than an aftermarket hu.

I like your idea of a cheap laptop to be put in the spare wheel area.

The problem I see in my case is that nyc streets are terrible and most laptop's hdd aren't solid state.

Update

I changed my mind about using the asus laptop and bought a mac mini instead for $150. I 'll have vmware installed to run windows and mac on it. This has large enough hard drive for my maps and multimedia.

I want to get rid of my HU and just have the screen mounted in its location,
but my amp is a 4 ch amp.

I didn't look into this yet,but im thinking if its still feasible for me to use usb sound card without a 5ch amp.

My current setup for audio:
a very basic sony headunit with aux input
4 Alpine Type S (6.5") Speakers
Apline 4ch amp
Alpine Single 10"

technically you could wire the front and rear together keeping the front and rear left speakers the same signal and the same for the rights. then use the 3rd and 4th channel to the sub. but im guessing the 4 channel isnt too powerful. you might underpower your 6.5s, let alone the 10" amp. just get some cheap mono amp off amazon or ebay. better than just a 4 channel.

i say sell the hu to get enough cash for a mono amp and sound card.

Ok who wants to build me one? I know nothing about computers but love the idea. I'm sure i could hook it all up just don't know anything about the hardware needed to pull this off.

Its really simple if all you are doing is connecting mannufactured hardware like I am. If you are connecting the screen/computer for a constant power source besides the lighter, its still easy as installing car audio.

Most people use car computers for GPS, Multimedia,
Internet(online Radio replaces xm, Emails,Im, you tube)
Tuning programs that connect the OBDII to the computer.

Essentially you need a touch screen for viewing and to replace keyboard/mouse.

Small computer(brain of the system), bluetooth usb , external gps module.

Let me know if i can be any help.
