Default Can anyone identify this device?

Can anyone identify what exactly this is, what it does and if it would be of any use to me or the dumpster? I was told by the previous owner that it was some sort of tracking device installed by the loan company and that it could possibly be used to shut the car off. It was plugged inline with the computer port under the steering column. Other than that, I know nothing about it.

the 'this side down' module... where was it located?
Are there any FCC warnings on it?

It was installed by the loan company. The ALDL port was unbolted, and the new one you see in the photo was bolted back in the original spot. The cable end was plugged into the original factory ALDL port and all that was just sitting on the insulation above the panel above your feet. There are no names on the outside of the device anywhere, just a serial number and FCC number.

I do know it is some sort of tracking system, although being plugged directly into the ALDL port makes me wonder if it does anything else. Either the loan company or the previous owner told me it could also be used to shut the car off, I think the PO said that though. The loan company told me it would do no harm to leave it or they or I could remove it, which I did.

It would be nice to know if it was usuable by me to track the car or shut it down if need be, but it may be hard to accurately identify it much less get it set up to work for me. It does seem to be along the lines of the device in the link posted though.

I popped it open to see what was inside and it seems to be called an Enfora Enabler. One of the chips is labeled as a GPS receiver module. It has a removable SIM card as well. The main board itself has a name and revision, Archimedes rev 5.03

lol, yeah, I need to look into this as being able to track my car would be quite nice, especially if I already have the equipment. Gonna have to check into the software and such.

Its a simple gps tracker as stated above. They have other available where you can remotely kill the starter circuit (not shut a vehicle down in motion). I used to install them for a few smaller dealers in Brooklyn that were victims of frequent lot thefts. Loan companies also install them and will kill your ignition if you default on payments.

edit: Viper, and Autopage offer systems that have GPS tracking capabilities.

Wow, that's pretty Big-Brotherish. I'd be tempted to deep six that thing if there was one on my car.
