Are stereo shops just crazy?

Are stereo shops just crazy?
I want to put in an aftermarket HU... all the places I've been to have said that I'd have to re-wire the whole car or buy a new amp? I am pretty sure this is not the care. Anyone have any idea why they would say that?

if you have the monsoon system, what they're talking about is the fact that all the speaker wires run back to the amp next to your spare tire.
to put in an aftermarket deck w/o an amp to go with it for your speakers means having to intercept those wires at the amp, or re-wire the car as they said.
running an amp would require them running new power wire back to the stock amp location and intercepting your speaker wires there.
iirc if you don't have monsoon.. they're full of it.

I do have the monsoon system, but does that even matter? couldn't I just plug the factory amp into the new HU?
I do plan on doing it myself. I am just trying to make sure I know what I'm doing before I begin. I thought it was pretty much just plug n play like pentavolvo said...

Whoa, you confused me on that post. Like posted directly above by LS1121, if he has a Monsoon unit AND he wants to keep the Monsoon amp, all he has to do is buy the proper harness for $10 and he's good to go. No wiring, cutting, hacking, basically plug and play. Do it yourself in about an hour. If he DOESN'T have the a Monsoon unit, again, all he needs to do is get the harness and use the stock wiring. If he wants to use an aftermarket amp, then he would need to do speaker rewiring. Many experts in this forum consider the Monsoon amp to be decent and probably the best part of the stock system.
What you said makes sense though. I'd have to read up on exactly what signal is being sent to the amp from the hu to the stock amp though, I mean if you don't have enough wires to bypass the stock amp I wouldn't think any sort of harness would work.
I haven't tore into this part of my project yet though, so.. I only know what I've heard so far. Good to know that you can bypass the stock amp without a total re-wire though. I was preparing to do just that. I'm fairly sure only 1 speaker in my car isn't blown.

Trust us, the stock amp is actually pretty good - in fact, my Kenwood HU with stock amp sounds a lot better than the aftermarket HU/amp I had in my previous car. Remember if you don't like it, you can always go change out to a aftermarket amp.

I'll have to do something sooner than later myself I suppose. With gas prices going up daily driving a truck tuned for premium isn't exactly saving me any money... but FM radio will get real old real fast in the car. and I'm not burning Cds like I did in HS.
