Default Factory Alarm Question

My '01 Z28 has a factory alarm, and is annoying the hell out of me. After pressing the lock key on the key-fob, or pressing the lock button on the driver's door panel the horn chirps twice and the lights flash. Pretty standard stuff. Here is where it gets annoying:about five or so seconds later the horn will blast twice more at full volume as if the alarm was tripped. How do I stop it from doing this? It was like this when I bought it, btw.

Unplug the shock sensor in the rear quarter in front of the spare tire. It is the most common component of the alarm to fail (usually due to moisture). If that solves the problem then you can decide whether you want to leave it disconnected or buy a new one.

How much do new units cost? Or should I just get an after-market alarm? I'll try unplugging the sensor when it stops raining.

While I'm asking: this will not disable the alarm in some way, will it? I ask as I suspect the car to have signs of a failed attempt at a break-in in its past (the trunk release mechanism is mis-aligned, and the latch does not release when the interior or key-fob buttons are pressed; I have to use the key, and that takes some wiggling to get it in the tumbler, and the hatch takes a good amount of effort to completely shut), and as much as I hate the car right now, I don't want it getting stolen.

The shock sensor is part number 10444498 and is available from the dealer for $46 or online for $27 (plus S&H).

Removing the shock sensor will only disable the impact sensing capability of the alarm. The rest (door and hatch triggers) will still work.

Is this a new thing or has it happened since you got the car?

Before you go and buy a new shock sensor, you may try turning the sensitivity down on it. (Its probably a rare thing, but someone could have turned it up before you purchased it. There should be an adjusting screw on the sensor box.)

I had the very same alarm issue with my 98 Trans Am, disconnected the shock sensor as described above, now all is well. Thanks for the good info!

Not to thread hijack but is there a feature on the alarm that is tied in with the ttops?

I don't believe there is, I would think they are covered by the shock sensor but I could be wrong.

I've been having the same issue with my alarm for a long time and if my memory serves me correctly unplugging the sensor didn't work. I don't remember if I actually got around to doing it though.. If it doesn't work then there's an issue with the BCM right?

Go aftermarket I just picked up a Viper 5704 for $200.00 bucks and $125 installed. It has lift, tilt, shock sensors. Starter kill , remote start, temp control, some sort of turbo timer feature, can control two vehicles on one remote. And works up to a mile away. If you add smart start you'll get gps coverage, updates and alerts about car via cell. As well as you can now access all features using your smart phone.

Was just asking bc I locked my keys in the car (on purpose) with the ttops off and reached in and unlocked the doors and it set the alarm off...

Unlocking without the remote and opening a door is what set off the alarm. The factory alarm is completely in the BCM and has no connection to the door locks except through the remote. If a door opens without the alarm being deactivated with the remote then the alarm will sound.
