Default Door Tweeter In-line Filter Question

I have an 02 TA with Monsoon. I was missing the sail panel subs completely (As in they were cut out and not even there WTF?) my hatch speakers were blown and my door speakers were crackly. I recently replaced my HU with a Kenwood and all of my speakers with a lvl. 4 package from Kee (Worth every penny!!) but am still having an issue with the crackly door speakers. I kept the in-line filter on the door tweeters but they are still crackly. I assume this means that the filters are bad. What are my options to replace? Any and all input is super appreciated.

The tweeter signal in Firebirds is unfiltered from the head unit (unlike Camaros which have a filtered signal from the Monsoon amp). That's the reason for the inline filters. GM doesn't list a part number for the factory filters but there is no reason you couldn't use the high pass side of the crossover that came with the speakers as an inline filter for the tweeters.

Thanks for the response. I'm a complete layman when it comes to acoustic electronics. Could you be a little more specific? I'm lost. Also I have replacement tweeters for the hatch (I know they're not needed but I'm a completest) and I don't see an inline filter on those. Is one not needed there? Just wire em' up?

Your package came with crossovers (the black boxes that came with the component speaker sets for the doors). Crossovers are devices that allow the splitting of a full range audio input signal into separate components by filtering one output for low frequency (mid-bass or subs) and the other output for high frequency (tweeters).

You normally wouldn't use those crossovers because the Monsoon system already has separate wiring to the mids and tweeters (so it doesn't need to be split by the crossover). But since the filtering on the factory tweeter wiring is bad, you can use the crossover as a filter in its place. Remove the bad factory filters, connect the factory tweeter wiring to the crossover's input side, and connect the tweeter output from the crossover to your door tweeters.

BAM! Completely understood! Thank you very much! So the hatch tweeters don't need a filter? I can just drop in replacements?

The hatch tweeters do require a filter but it is already there - just farther up the wiring. If you're not having sound problems with them then you should be fine.

One last question. I bought a set of Kicker 41CST204 3/4" CS-Series 4-Ohm Car Tweeters for my hatch and they included this which I did not use in the hatch as the filters are fine since there's no distortion: External passive high-pass crossover (6 dB per octave at 4,500Hz). Could I use this for my door tweeters in place of the larger crossover they came with for a filter?

Yes, you can use the crossovers from either speaker set because you are just trying to filter out low frequency signal that could damage the tweeters. It's not the ideal combination for best sound because crossovers are designed to match the characteristics of the components they come with but it will be fine for all but the most picky listener (and a car is not the ideal audio space anyway).

Awesome thanks! I'll just stick with the larger crossover that they included then. Appreciate the help!
