Monsoon guy trying to get some thump...
Drive an 02 Trans am, Monsoon stereo system, everything just as from factory...
I'm not sure how to distinguish a blown speaker, but I cannot put my bass controls (the 2 to the far left of the control thingie), up at all, or it makes like a fart distorting banging sound and sounds terrible.. So I'm guessing this means blown...it is only the speaker behind the passanger seat, but how can i tell if its a speaker or a woofer.... And whatever the case, what can I do to fix the problem, where can I buy whatever I need (links if possible)...
Also, I have a HiFonics Zeus ZX4000 2 channel Amplifier 200 watts x 2.
It's still sitting in its box in my room, and I guess I'm going to go to Http://www.subthump.com, and buy the stealth box, because I want to put 1 sub there.. What are the most commonly trusted subs (10") that people put in the cubby hole? Is there a best?
Thank you so much, I'm sorry I sound like I don't really know what I'm talking about, but the truth is that I don't when it comes to audio.. :-D
When you say speaker behind the passenger seat, you mean to its side, or behind it?
In a TA, the HATCH speakers are a 4" midrange driver and a tweeter. To the side (directly behind the driver seat) are gm's version of subs.
http://www.houston-f-body.org/tech/monsoon/ Might be helpful too. Read the stickies in this forum as well.
edit: Spelling corrections.
Your speakers might not be blown, you might just be expecting too much from them.
As far as a 10 for the subthump box, you can get some good woofers for less than $150. They even recommend some on subthump's site.
I have an Infinity Perfect 10 that I plan on trying. More of a SQ sub than an SPL sub, but that's what I want.
2.) It would be best to filter the bass to the factory speakers, via bass blockers. It might not be necessary if 1) works well. This will allow you to drive them louder because they don't need to reproduce bass anymore.
3.) If the subs work really well you may be best of completely disonnecting your factory subs, and tossing bass blockers on all the original drivers.
Stealth Box plus one of the subs they recommend on their product page would work just fine. I got the MTX Thunderform box which came with a free MTX 4500 sub and am very happy with it, although I'll probably upgrade the sub in the future.
Personally I'd recommend getting at least a new amp before long (you'll get more out of your sub as well). I'm not big into audio, but I'm certainly glad I replaced the Monsoon amp and H/U. Makes a huge difference. Then probably just throw some full-range speakers in the sail panels (I used Alpine S-170A's - about $50-60 a pair online).
