6x9's in the rear?
Yes, I did this and it sounds so much better with 6x9's in the rear. Just cut out the plastic mounting. Leave a small lip so you can screw the 6x9 to each hole and just put the grill over it. Looks stock and sounds great...

Here's a couple of Kenwood 5x7's in the rear to show you how much room there is:
The 'notch' you see next to the speaker was for a dome tweeter, that were connected to the tweeter side of the OEM Monsoon outputs in the rear. Sounded very nice.

Depends on how you hook it all up. You won't get any highs out of the OEM mid-section outputs, but you can directly wire-up the highs in the 3-ways to the rear tweeter outputs if you're carefull. I had a set of domes in the rear panels as well (see picture for notch). It sounded great. Much more depth with the larger woofers.

How much depth is there back for 6x9's without changing anything? I haven't had the rear covers off of mine yet.... and it's damn cold here so I don't want to spend a lot of time messing around with it this time of year, but it looks like most of that could be done rather simpy.

How much depth was there for the 6x9's by the rear seats?
But I also see that there are 5x7's in the hatch area, correct? I think that would be a hell of a lot better then some 4" speakers. how much depth is there back there? Also, how hard is it to make more space?

When i was trying to install my 6x9's in the rear hatch, i had the same idea... cut out the monsoons and just place them there. However, on the drivers side, pushing the insulation away, i still didnt have enough room to place the speaker there. My pioneers had too big a magnet and I didnt want to bang down the metal. So in order to still use my new speakers, i bought portable 6x9 enclosures from frys costing me about $20 for the pair. I hate it though. looks very ugly and I plan to take them out as soon as I can afford components to replace em.
I have a shot of one of the opened holes in the mid-section. I'll dig it up tomorrow. Not too much had to be cut, and they had pretty large magnets. As for the hatch-area speakers, you'd need some fairly shallow 6x9's. Those 5x7's were pretty deep for 5x7's, and they cleared just fine.

It's no incredible feat. Just make sure you secure the wires suspended from the woofer so they don't make contact and vibrate.
