you could use it as a fan switch or better yet, a fuel pump switch, kinda like an anti theft device.

You wouldn't happen to know the part number on the asr switch would you? I got my car sans switch. Had to unplug the asr.

OH, but it WILL work w/cutouts

The switch will need to power a DPDT relay
Power on - relay energizes and opens the cutout. . .
Power off - relay deenergizes and closes the cutout. . .

I'm using this setup right now successfully. I've also tapped into the energizes part to operate my A/F meter so I remember to shut it when I'm done driving.

Relays are not hard to understand at all.

Here is a thread on them

i'll have to look at my cutout harness because it is a mccord, i think i remember seeing several wires coming out of that damn thing. the switch it came with is progressive, and it has 3 positions. oncei look at it i'll be able to figure it out, thats why al lthis seems confusing right now becuase i havent really looked into it. i probably will wire the ASR switch to the cutout, might look pretty cool.

one thing though, it looks like if i click the ASR switch on the cutout will open, after it is fully open, will the relay stop supplying power? will it damage the motor at all for it to be "always on?" the way it is setup now with the supplied switch it is either opening - off - or closing. so basically it would be like me holding the button open all the time.

The Mccord has 4 wires. . .one is green and another is red. . .the remaining two are for indicators of valve open/shut. I've got a 3" Mccord also. I sealed off the remaining two wires. When the valve is full open, theres a microswitch that kills power to it. Likewise with it shut. With my extra foglight switch, I've wired it so the power goes to the relay to open when I turn it on. It also illuminates the foglight indicator telling me the valve is open. When the power is off (i.e. I turn it off) the relay deenergizes and reverses the polarity and shuts the valve. Also the indicator on the switch goes out. Clear as mud yet? I'm using a DPDT relay.

You do know that the foglight switch and ASR switch are different right? they look the same, but the ASR switch only has one position, i think it is called a momentary switch or something, where its signal is only monetary, not constant like the foglight switch, it springs back into its original position after you click it, you click it and it turns off, click it again it turns on, not like the foglight switch where if you click it one way it will be on, and the other way it will be off. but it guess if it works with the foglight switch, then it should work since everything should be the same exceot for the physical state of the switch.

apparently i need a latching relay to make the signal constant and it should work, according to my old thread from last year lol https://ls1tech.com/forums/wiring-stereo-electronics/387124-wires-asr-switch.html

No, it still won't work. The difference is that the foglight switch will stay on (circuit complete) until you manually turn it off. The ASR switch breaks the circuit as soon as you let go because it's a momentary switch. The foglight switch controls a SPDT relay that "flip-flops" the power between two different terminals based on whether the switch is feeding power to the relay coil. That allows you to reverse the polarity at the motor by turning the switch off. You don't have that option with the ASR switch. You would have to use a latching relay to continue providing power after you let go of the switch so that the cutout opens fully. But then you have no way of using the same switch to reverse polarity and close the cutout.

You can use it for anything that needs a momentary connection. A garage door opener seems like a good idea. How about a "flash to pass" button for the headlights?
