Default What do you think of this H/U?

A quick run down of the new system. Just subs and a mono amp. 2 10" Alpine Type-R's and an Alpine 600x1 @ 2ohm mono amp packed in a nice Subthump t-top box. All I need to find now is the right H/U.

I've been looking at the Kenwoods for their DVD, mp3, ipod, touch screen features and navigation compatibility. That and theyre well priced. I've been told by a local audio shop that a new 7" roll out will be released this or next month and is supposed to be a great unit. However, Ive found another Kenwood unit thats out now, and as far as I can tell it fits the same description of this "unreleased" unit. And is already for sale at around 700+ while the "unreleased" model will run me me about is a bout a g-note from tis local shop.

What do you think of this unit? And does anyone know about this newer version coming out? Pro's / Con's in comparison?

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=16931

Anyone have any other suggestions for a similar unit? Hopefully priced the same if not cheaper? Preferably Alpine, Kenwood, or Eclipse, but ofcourse I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions. I cant wait to get this system mapped out and installed.

Kenwoods typically have a strong feature set for the price. I believe them to be on par with the other midrange players (Pioneer, Alpine,etc.).

One thing unknown to most is that many credit cards have a policy that doubles the manufacturer warranty for up to a year. For that pricey of a head unit I would recommend using such a card. The fact of the matter is there's a lot of content in a h/u like that and regardless of which common brand you buy, a decent warranty is the best policy.

Finally, car stereo manufacturers release new models at least every year. Sometimes they are major upgrades, sometimes some features are lost while others are gained, and sometimes the new model is actually a downgrade. Compare carefully the feature sets and go off of that. Do not just assume the new model will be better, often times it is not.

I see.

Double the warranty you say? Any idea which cards this applies to? Would this apply to a purchase made online or only from a local installation shop? (Certified dealer or something of that nature.)

I'll definetely compare the two, I just cant seen to find information on the unreleased mode, I guess for obvious reasons. So I'll run it by the local shop and see what they say about the two. Thanks for your input.

Anyone else have any comments? Possibly some experience with this specific unit?

Kenwood is all I have gone with (head-unit wise). That is also a nice deal for the model you posted in your thread. I can remember when that model cost well over $1,000.00. The only thing bad about the head-units that fold out, angle, are that the motors are eventually gonna stop working. So make sure you have a good warrenty backing you up and you may be able to get an additional 3-year warrenty from the place you purchased it from. You cant go wrong with Kenwood.

I think it is most common on Mastercard, but there are many cards that do it. You have to read the terms of your credit card.

It is quite common, but most folks don't know about it.

On the same note there are some (not nearly as many) credit cards that also offer price protection. Say you buy the stereo for $1,000 and then see it (in print) for $800. You point it out to the cc company and eventually get a $200 credit. There are NOT many cards that offer this, they certainly don't broadcast it, and there is usually an annual limit on the price matching you can do.

But those options are real, and available. Study up, they are great tools for electronics hobbyists to have.

I don't think I'd ever pay $800 dollars for a head unit. But then again, I can't see putting DVD into a car's dash unless you live in it. It's not like you can watch a movie while driving down the highway (I don't let anyone else drive my SS).

Of course that's just me. If you want it and can afford to drop that kind of scratch on toys, go for it!

CamaroSS: Good point, I'll look in to the warranty situation. 3 years from now Im sure some new crazy head units will be out anyway. So a good warranty would definetely cover me for a while. Glad to hear the positive feedback on kenwood h/u's too.

Toddd: Very interesting. I'll do a little research and see what I can dig up. Some useful info. Thanks again.

HiTech: lol Well I cant. But i'll find a way. I dont know really whats so appealing about it. But its been one of those little things ive always wanted.

Well, you could always live in your car and save on rent. At least you'd have a need for the DVD player that way. lol

lol Well when it you really get down to it. I also dont NEED almost all my bolt ons netting nearly 350rwhp, 18in custom rims, or hell, a 12 second daily driver. In a logical world, I'd drive a Prius. But, well its the little things like smokin tires and having a flip up dvd screen in my car that make all the other crap worth it. lol

But, I couldnt agree more with you.

I say do it! Nothing looks better than the fold out T.V/DVD in the dash. Does anyone know if you could run navagation from this type of H/U?

Damn, you can run navagation with that H/U! I paid $450.00 for a Kenwood H/U a while back. For a few hundred more you get alot more options through the DVD H/U. Not bad at all.

Thats actually why im getting it to begin with, for the navi. I just cant afford the navi unit right away. I had a portable cobra, but returned it because it was too big and blocked too much of the windshield when it was mounted.
