Default jl 8wO's in my sail panels.... pics

began enlarging 6.5 hole. used a dremel cutting wheel. make slits on the sides, and bent the tabs back. after massaging it with a hammer, it welcomed the new jl with no problems. the jl doesn't hit the back wall. the taps kinda gave it a litte bit of a spacer.

had to cut off bottom grille holder on the panel and on the grille

the panel doesn't touch the surround of the speaker. close, but not touching.

grille replaced with inside liner removed.

Looks good! How do they sound? Are you running an amp with them?

I'd love to see someone put a set of 8w7's back their, but it would take ALOT of work to make them fit! But yeah, how does it sound now? Do they hit comparably to a single 10"?

8W7's in the sail panel is not a good idea at all for several reasons

1. Not enough depth to mount the sub
2. Not anywhere NEAR the proper enclosure for it, even if it was glassed.
3. Those panels would rattle to high hell and back with the power the W7 puts out.
4. With the excursion that the sub has, it would hit the grill almost all the time under loud volumes or long bass throws.

I would say that either the 8W0 or the 8W1 are about as deep as can go there, maybe even the 8W3, but that would be pushing it for sure. but to the original poster, VERY nice looking!! how does it sound?

It looks like the sub is going to hit where you cut the tab at the bottom, or it will be very close.

it is pretty close, i need to cut a little more off. but the sub doensn't hit it. is sounds pretty good. it would sound a ton better with a real amp. right now everthing is still hooked up to the monsoon amp with all stock wires. so far the hu has been upgraded to the jensen dvd player, (flame suit dawned), jl 6.5 coaxles in the front, jl full range 4"s in the back with the jl 8's in the sails. it's a pretty tight fit.

i've read on another forum of people putting eu-700's in the sails, and those are 6" speakers but take a lot of work to get to fit. i think anything deeper than 3.5 inches with out some sort of spacer, will definately hit the back wall. i didn't have to cut anything but the original hole to accomodate the new speakers.

Does it sound any louder with the extra cone area compared to the stock ones? How is the mid bass and the lows?

i'll post some updated pics. i had to trim the plastic panel a little more just to make sure there's no rubbing. i finally got the other one in the passenger side. unless you already have an amp to push them, i'd say hold off on doing this. i like the originality of it. but being that i don't have a real amp, still the monsoon, i'm not getting the hard deep lows that i want. the stock 6.5's sounded better off the monsoon amp. but once i get a real amp, i'll let you know.

does some one have an amp they'd like to get rid of for cheap?

are the JL subs 4 ohm? if so that is why, the stock 6.5's are 2 ohm.

You cut the power out put in half. But it is still the monsoon.

That looks nice!!! I mounted some 10W3v2's in mine. Love them WAY better than the MB Quart 6.5's!

2 ohm 8W0's (if available) would still not be as loud as the 6.5" stockers. As most regular speakers are inherently more efficient than most sub-woofers at turning electrical impulses into physical vibrations (sound waves). The fact that the stockers are 2 ohms just means they work the amplifier harder by drawing more electrical current. While it does make the stocker louder than a mechanically identical speaker with a 4 ohm voice coil. It does not follow that all 2 ohm speakers are louder than all 4 ohm speakers. Electrical power is not the same as sound power. How loud a speaker is at a given input level has much more to do with it's mechanical design than with the impedance rating of it's voice coil.

An efficient 4 ohm speaker (such as the Pioneer TS-M7PRS midbasses I have in my sails) can be just as loud or even louder than the 2 ohm stockers at the same volume setting.

I call bs. Everytime that someone buys jensen equipment at the shop I work at, all the installers refuse to put them in. Jensen equipment is constantly being returned and its always equipment malfunction, not installation error. Its the only brand out of sony, eclipse, pioneer, Jvc, panasonic, alpine, that I refuse to work with. THat being said, I dont even like sony, but they dont give out until at least the first 6 months or so.

My Jensen VM9410 7" flipout has been in my car for over a year now with zero problems.. I love the thing!!! Cheap and plays EVERYTHING. Easy to control as well. way better than the Sony screen I had. I'll buy another one, this time maybe double DIN non-flip out.
