Default Pre-1999 to Post-1999 Monsoon Change - Plug 'n play?

Upon research, looks like the only way I can get an auxilary input thru my 1998 monsoon is to hardwire a FM modulator ( ).....If I were to buy a post 1999 monsoon with the aux ability (gm9 aux input), would the wiring be a straight change? Take out the old head unit, put in the new head unit and connect it the same exact way?

Also, average price of a monsoon head unit?

Yes, completely plug and play. However, when you're shopping remember that the Firebird and Camaro versions were different. The Camaro radios were black with black ***** and blue/white illumination while the Firebird radios were dark gray with gray ***** and red illumination. Also, the Camaros came with speed compensated volume control but the Firebirds came with power antennas. In other words, they'll plug right in but there are differences.

Head units vary in price. I sold a 2000 CD HU for $75 but I've seen them as high as $150. Cassette HUs are generally cheaper (less demand).

Now, if your 98 has a cassette then you also have the option of using a cassette adapter for auxiliary input. The sound quality isn't quite as good as a direct connection but it's certainly better than an FM modulator. (Actually, the sound quality is excellent but tape drives don't have the dynamic range that a direct connection does.)

I might be remembering wrong, but I think you need to get a 2000 model to be absolutely safe. The changeover happened during the 99 model year, so there would be some risk that a 99 would be lacking the aux compatability.

You should probably search and do some research before hand, if possible as well. People post constantly about getting burned buying a used deck the seller claimed was from a 00 or whatever but didn't have the aux needed.

Just because it was pulled from an 00 doesn't mean someone didn't replace it previously. I don't want to make you paranoid but you should take care to ensure the seller knows exactly what you are looking for.

Hmm, on this note, are there any factory CD players that have RDS that will swap right in? I love RDS.

None of the F-body radios ever had RDS. I don't know of any GM radios with RDS that aren't double-DIN (too big for the 1.5 DIN opening in an F-body without modification).

Could I put one of those in my car? If I can find one super cheap... Don't want to buy an aftermarket HU right now because none of them are full-featured enough for me.

Looking for (aftermarket):
-MP3 CD
-HD radio tuner
-Bluetooth
-RDS

Damn! Thanks guys - answered all my questions....looks like I might be in search of a new monsoon deck, I think they go pretty cheap on ebay. Guess I'll try to get one off a powerseller.

Thanks again,
Matt

Radio Data System. A lot of radio stations can now broadcast text data to be displayed on the radio in addition to the normal music track. The good ones use the capability to display title and artist but many just display their call sign or some advertising. The RDS system also lets stations encode time and station format (rock, country, talk, etc.) in the signal so you can let your RDS radio find the kind of station you like automatically. It can also be set to break into any other music you're listening to in order to provide traffic updates.

are you sure the cavalier radio isint a double din? the RDS in my 02 cavi looks bigger than my 98 Camaro radio. also, it looks to be the same size as my dad's 04 silverado RDS radio.
