Default rewiring monsoon sound system

After doing some research I think I want to remove my Monsoon stereo from my Camaro. Does anybody have a wiring diagram or info on how to rewire the car?

That all depends on how much you are rewiring!! Meaning, are you just getting a new aftermarket stereo, are you going with an aftermarket amplifier to run your speakers??!! How far are you wanting to go? I have completely rewired mine and nothing is stock. I started with just the HU and went from there. It really depends on your budget and what you are trying to acheive as far as sound.

well i was thinking a component set for the front and some 6.5's in the sail panels. probably keep the 4's or whatever they are in the hatch too just for fill. i might add a sub later on but I can wire that in after the fact pretty easily. I'm not totally sure how wiring a sound system works even. Do you just start off the plug on the back of the HU and go from there? is there somewhere I can get a layout of what pins on the connecter of the HU go where if that is the case?

Yeah, in the Monsoon FAQ thread at the top of the forum. There's a lot of other information there as well - like don't rewire unless you have to. You can replace the head unit and speakers but leave the amp and wiring with very satisfactory results.

i know that is an option also but i was contemplating an aftermarket amp. i just wanted to see how hard it would be to rewire.

Rewiring an f-body is no more difficult than doing it on any other car - actually much easier than many newer-model vehicles that incorporate a lot of vehicle electronics into the factory head unit.

well I have never wired a complete stereo system before. I have done many speaker installs though. I assume that all I would need to do is get a diagram for the connector on the HU to figure out what pin goes to what speaker?

Not exactly. If you're rewiring then all you need is lots of wire and the owners manual that goes with your aftermarket head unit. Since you're rewiring, you don't need to know what the factory wiring did because you won't be using it - that's what rewiring means.

Now, if you just want to replace the factor head unit and speakers but use the factory wiring to connect them then you can use the pinout listing in the Monsoon FAQ thread to figure out which wire is which. You should get a wiring harness adapter that plugs into the factory harness and splices into the new head unit's wiring. That way you don't have to cut the connector off the factory harness.

ok. i was doing some more thinking and i was wondering if there was a way to replace the factory amp with an aftermarket one? basically all i would be re-using then would be the wiring. new HU, new speakers and probably add a sub. I know the factory amp will work with aftermarket speakers but i think i would like the sound of a complete aftermarket system better.

i should add that the stereo in my car was pretty hacked up (ie factory speakers wired back in without the factory connecters and wire-nuts for home wiring used, random screws holding speakers in, etc.) so i'm not totally sure what's all intact in the system at the moment.

Well, it would be very difficult to find a decent aftermarket amp that is small enough to fit where the factory amp is mounted. Also, the factory amp takes speaker-level input from the head unit. There are some aftermarket amps that do this as well but most will recommend using pre-amp output from your head unit to your replacement amp so that you're not introducing two sources of distortion (head unit amp and power amp). That would mean running your own RCA cables from HU to amp rather than using the factory wiring harness.

Thanks. After I posted that up I thought about it some more and realized both of those potential problems. I think for now I'll just reaplace the speakers and HU and maybe next year do a complete re-wire and add in an amp.
