Is there a way to make the aux in work with out having a CD playing? I did the wiring per the first post but my CD player doesn't work at all so I can't test it.

I don't have an ipod myself, I assume they charge through the dock connector so it shouldn't affect the headphone jack audio.

The CD player does need to be able to play - or at least think it is - so the stereo will pass the audio through.

Jason,
Do you think with the jack plugged into the headphone jack of the ipod and the ipod connector/charger to the cigeratte lighter? Would that work or would I see smoke?

A charger plugged into the dock connector should be independent of the headphone jack - they are two completely separate cables & connectors, correct?

Correct, however I noticed a small amount of feedback when I had my phone charging and hooked up to play audio simultaneously. You may or may not have the same problem.

Going to probably get a ground loop issue and may be the source of your feedback.

Other than the feed back issue, there is no problem charging and playing at same time.

Mmmm, I didn't think of the reverb. Your idea is good or we can do a quick charge for 10 mins w/ the Ipod disconected & pwr from the cig lighter. That should be good wor a while.

I hit er with a hammer and got the cd player spinning and it works like a champ! Now I just need to record a CD with one 78 minute song on it and we should be good to go. Well till the CD player craps out again...

Thanks so much for this write up Jason! I really appreciate it.

Could you use a jack with 3 inputs instead? I dont have any use for my casette player, so would that work, or does the HU need to be fooled into thinking the casette is playing? Great writeup btw

I'm not sure what you mean by 3 inputs, but it does need to think it's playing something for it to pass through audio, either playing a CD or tape

With a cassette HU, you can simply buy a cassette adapter to connect your auxiliary device without any HU modifications. The difference in sound quality between a cassette adapter and splicing into the tape head wiring would be unnoticeable. Cassette adapters are available at Radio Shack and even WalMart for under $20.

From what I can tell by quickly looking at it, there are pin connections coming from the CD player, instead of wires. In the last picture, you can see 4 orange female recivers at the very bottom of the picture. These plug into the pins that can be seen at the bottom of the HU. Do these replace the wire harness that is usually spliced into?

i just did this mod today and have the same hu as you. you want to splice into the 1st and 3rd red wire opposite of the blue one. hope this helps

Default Thanks, Jason

Just wanted to post a "thank you" to Jason Novak for this post. I did this mod today on my '99 Grand Am, and it worked like a charm.

My only difficulty was that after getting all the wiring done, I only had the right channel when playing a CD with the 3.5mm unplugged. Turned out I'd overheated the 3.5mm jack while soldering pin 2. Got a new jack and more carefully soldered it up... problem solved.

I also sacrificed a USB cable instead of using Cat5 cabling. USB cabling has the correct number of conductors and is shielded cabling, which is recommended by some folks doing similar mods.

Thanks again Jason... very helpful post.

Finally did this mod 3 years after bookmarking this thread. Used cat-5 like suggested and grounded the jack to one of the allen head screws on the case. Ran it to the ashtray to conceal it. Works like a champ!
