You have to get a line-level adapter. You can get themfor just a few bucks from almost stereo or electronics shop. It will convert the speaker-level output of the head unit to the pre-amp (line-level) input needed by most amps (you can also buy some amps with speaker-level inputs). They aren't too hard to hook up, and i know plenty of people have done it.

Yes a line level converter is also known as a high to low level converter which transfers speaker level signal to a low level signal which is what your RCA would be on the back of an aftermarket HU with the main difference being output voltage.
You can hook this to any speaker level output on the back of the HU. Personally I would run it off the rear left and right outputs on the back of the stock HU.

No, that's an amplified and filtered signal. You want to connect before the Monsoon amp - either at the head unit or on the input side of the amp itself.

What if the amp has speaker level inputs? Where would you connect then?

If your amp has speaker-level inputs then you can patch into the speaker wires on the input side of the Monsoon amp without using a line output converter.

So you tap into the same wires if you're using a converter or an amp with speaker level inputs?

Yes. The LOC takes speaker-level input and converts it to low-level for use on amps that don't have speaker-level inputs. Amps that have speaker-level inputs don't require this conversion so they just connect directly to the speaker signal wires.

The wire colors and pin positions for both the head unit and the amp are listed in the Monsoon FAQ sticky.

You can get one from any car stereo shop, one of the big box electronics stores (Best Buy, Circuit City), or even Wal*Mart. They should be around $15 or less.

couldnt he just tap into the hatch speaker its self

split the wires going to the left(or right) speaker in the hatch ... and split them so they go to the line level filter and the regular speaker

right?

that way you arnt messing around with the stock deck and cutting up its wires

its easyier to do

and you have to use alot less rca cable

Yes, except that you're getting amplified, filtered signal at the speaker from the Monsoon amp. Considering that the amp is under the right hatch trim panel, it's just as convenient to get signal from the input side of the amp rather than the output side at the hatch speaker. Without the added amplification you'll get a cleaner signal to convert.

So I can take the right and left channel from the input right before the factory Monsoon Amp....
