Default speaker question

hey guys, i have a 2000 firebird w/ the monsoon system. i have both of the stock subs out. i am adding 2 memphis 10's so the bass part is covered. does anyone see a problem with hooking up some 6x9's to another amp and putting them in the stock sub place? i want to add more high to midrange sound. will removing the stock subs mess anything up? thanks

i would think you'll be ok as long as u are using an amp running from a HU to power the 6x9's. the monsoon amp will only send bass signals, and it will really underpower any good 6x9. ur only real problem is mounting them in the panel, but i cant help you on that one...

alternatively, for a cheaper route, you could have the 4 6.5's (door and sail) powered by the HU or a different amp, and have all the highs you'll ever need, plus your subs will be putting out the required bass. this is the way im doing my camaro for now. its gonna be better than stock by far.

Why use 6x9 speakers? An oval speaker will never sound as good as the equivalent round speaker. So a good 6.5" round coaxial speaker running off a separate amp will fit better and sound better. You might even consider just powering them off the head unit since you don't want more power coming from behind you than from in front.

Thanks guys, but let me try this again. i want to completely remove the stock subs, and add non sub 6x9's in their place. and leave the stock sub wires unconnected. i don't really need those subs do i?

non-sub 6x9's? if you're going to be running them off of an amp, i'd just let them have full signal. that way you can get some mids that the true subs in the rear cant accurately reproduce. as for the stock wiring, leave it there, but just tape them off and run your own wiring from your amp to your speakers. its not that hard to hide the wires. i've left all my original wiring and stuff in case i ever sell the car and the new owner would want to have the stock system in it.

Okay, let me try this again. Why on earth would you insist on using 6x9 speakers when you can get better sound and certainly better fit with the right size round speaker? 6x9 speakers go well with 8-track players.

Agreed. People who don't know much besides the sizes of speakers that exist seem to opt for the 6x9s because of their "size" and think bigger is better / louder. They may output a little more bass over a 6.5", but that's about it.
