This is a common thing. You can definitely upgrade all but the amp. 6.5" components in the doors, 6.5" DVC subs in the sail panels (these are the hardest thing to find, but there are a couple, including Bazookas from KEE Audio), and 4" components i think in the rear. I think you should talk to Ian Kee of Kee Audio and get some ideas from him. He's very helpful and will give you a decent price.

You need to change the amp to get proper sound from aftermarket speakers because you need to use the crossover that comes with them. The stock Monsoon system has a crossover built in. I'd say that crossover was built for the stock system, but in reality, it was just built to be cheap. It's definitely not acceptable for other speakers.

It really depends on what kind of sound you want/need. Many people have expressed that they are perfectly happy with the sound they get out of the stock amplifier. Apparently there's a huge increase in SQ to be gained from replacing the factory deck. Rather than just tearing it all down and throwing huge amounts of money into it, replace the speakers and deck and see if you like it. You can always add the amp later.

That's true, but even more people are just fine with their stock setup, speakers and all. And with a good enough amp costing maybe $80 (as low as $50 if you get it used; that's what I paid for my Eclipse 3620 a few years ago), it makes sense to just swap it. I mean, if you're going for $40 speakers and just want something a little better, maybe I wouldn't, but if you want good sound, I would definitely swap it.

I have the Monsoon system also and it doesn't really impress me much. I don't think I would keep any of it.If you go to all the trouble you might as well replace the amp also.

I'm trying! Step two is the doors this weekend. Then all I have to figure out is if ANYTHING at all is worth running in the hatch location. I know Comp's there are just too bright and in your face to mesh. When I get it all in I am going to play around and see what can be shoe-horned in there that sounds good. It's easy enough to remove them and play with different setups so keep looking here. Maybe Kee has played with some different things but haven't heard his opinion on that area yet.

Leave them out. Go with just fronts and a 10/12" in the back. You can put rears in the sail panels and turn the fade mostly to the front (like Front+5) if you really want the rear fill.

If you pull out the hatch speakers or unplug them, you aren't going to get any highs from behind you unless you are using an aftermarket amp since the sails are filtered, right? I don't think I could deal with that personally. I like to have it in the front and back, though I have known people who like to have only fronts.

I always used to disagree with people on rear fill until I kept having issues with my Focal 6x9's. When the one finally crapped I disconnected the other and have just been running all front and two subs in the rear. After a couple of days of me adjusting to it (I always find any change takes that long) I don't think I could go back to rear fill. I may plop in a set of M-6's for mid-bass only for a try but I kind of think my stage was always ruined back then and now I know it. This will be my big test to prove it!

You don't hear much from the tweeters back there anyway. Treble is very directional.
