Default Dissapointed in the DBs

I have two Alpine Type-r 12's in the back of my Camaro in a non-ported box. The subwoofers are being pushed by a single Alpine PDX1.1000. Four gauge wire from a yellow top battery no Cap. I also have a Alpine head unit. The amp is turned up maybe 3/4 of the way, and the HU was at +10 subwoofer out of 15. My dad bought a Decibal reader, so just for jollies I put it in my car. I had a bass Cd. I was disapointed to hear at 22 volume the DB reader was only reading 121with the windows down. Is that normal? I was looking for more like 140+. Are there any tricks to get more? Is it going to be alright to turn the Amp all the way and turn the subwoofer to +15 to see if I can hit 140+?
Just to compare my exhaust at idle was 106 and at 3000rpm was 112
Thanks for any help

Most people run R's ported with plenty of power. Any reason why 140? Those hand helds aren't like a Termlab Mic. U got me thinking now! I have one and may take my Civic down the road to see what she does now that I have all locations up. Thanks man! Now I am off!

Just checked and it is at work. My S-10 did 121 dB with the hand held with a single IDQ 10"

The only reason I said 140 is because a buddies truck did one 150 at a bass show and mine seemed to a little bit softer then his. Well I glad I set the light bulb off to go see what your Civic does. I want to know. What is a IDQ? Would rolling up the windows have any effect or no?

Yes, roll up the windows. It should make a difference. Type-R 12's can get pretty loud, but I'm not sure about 140+. That's pretty f'in loud. Like the others said, though, those handheld meters aren't all that accurate either. Some of those meter vary by as much as say +/-7 or 8db!

Rolling up the windows should cut down the air space inside the car. Well I think I am going to turn the subs up to +15 first and see what numbers it gives me, and if I am not satisfied with that the amp is going up. What numbers do you guys think that should hit? I guess my numbers were a little off. Thank for the help so far.

You don't need 140. As for turning the gain all the way up, I dare you.

Your right I don't need 140 but that was my 1 time goal. I don't listen to my music turned up loud all the time. The only time I listen to it turned up is when someone is inconsiderte at street lights and other stopping locations. Then I will turn up my system. I just want 140 one time just cause. Turn the amp up doesn't scare me, it will be up for a test and turned back down. The two subs were degisned to run of the amp. I don't see any problems.

Why did you say that the gain shouldn't be that high? I thought the more gain the more power to the subs, thus giving me more DBs

Double the power doesn't equal double dB's. I can't remember the exact figures but like 2-3 dB's. Same goes for a second sub.

Decibels don't increase linearly. It's more of an exponential increase. So an increase of 2 or 3 db is pretty significant.

I heard that for every db the sound is ten times louder. There are other controls on the face of the amp do those contorls help me at all? I don't have any pics of the controls, but I can get some. I know for sure there is highpass and low pass it is set on low for all bass. Freq. don't know to much about that. On average what would the windows up give me db wise.2-3 or 4+

3db is perceived as 2x as loud if i recall

the gain isnt a volume **** once you turn it too high you start clipping. IMO at 3/4 gain with a decent headunit you are prly clipping already

10dB (also 10x power) is twice as loud. 3dB is notable, but not a major difference in volume, but is a major difference in power.

Yup, it takes twice the power to increase volume by 3dB, which is noticeable but nowhere near twice the volume.

What is clipping? Is is where the sound starts to fall off if the gain is set too high.

It's where you no longer have enough output voltage to reproduce the whole audio signal. Google it and you'll find sites with diagrams and stuff.
