Default Steering wheel control question

I recently bought and installed a pioneer headunit. I noticed the second plug from the gm unit had no spots on the new headunit, so I left it off. After getting the radio dialed in, I noticed that my steering wheel controls were not active anymore. I'm guessing that was the plug that I didn't plug in. Is there a way to convert that over to the radio so I can have steering wheel controls with the new radio?

Yeah. The other part they didn't tell me is that the one antenna plug needs a converter for the larger port on the pioneer unit, so I went to best buy and that was another $13.

well I went to that site, which is very cool btw. All I found was this:"

the same thing the best buy guy offered me. Is there anything else out there? I don't want to pay $70.

That is the only way to make them work. I picked up a Alpine head unit and just bought the SWI-JACK from ebay for $45 shipped. Just search SWI-PS and I'm sure you will find a good deal.

BTW, there are too many different types of cars out there and its almost impossible to make the aftermarket head units work will all these steering wheel controls. The PAC unit takes the steering wheel control output and converts it to something that the head unit can understand.

I see. So there is no cheap alternative. Thats a shame.

I was debating back and forth whether or not I should do it with my car. I figured, add $45 and do it right the first time. I know I would regret it later.

according to the installation instructions you only have to use resistors if the steering wheel controls have a wire for each button, would not be used with our cars.

To install the SWI-PS in an f-body, red goes to switched power, black goes to ground, green goes to the dark blue wire in the factory harness (there is no corresponding wire in the harness adapter), and the 1/8" plug goes to the wired remote jack on the back of the head unit.

BTW, that extra harness you didn't use is for the factory CD changer. The harness is installed even if you didn't get a factory changer.
