Radio staying on when car off?
My friend just got a 2002 V6 Camaro. And he was telling me that he put in a new head unit and when he turns his car off the radio stays on. What can cause this?

Thats what i was thinking but he lives in Ohio so i couldnt check it out for him. But could it be anything else?
He also said that the Monsoon was staying on on before he put the new HU in.

If the Monsoon headunit was doing it also, then its not a wiring issue unless the wiring had already been tampered with.
Do the interior lights or anything else also stay on? If so, the its the probably a door switch. The RAP (Retained Accessory Power) circuit keeps power to the radio and other accessories until a door is opened. If opening the door doesn't turn off the radio, then the door switch has failed. You can easily test that by opening the passenger-side door. If the radio turns off, then the driver-side door switch has failed. If the radio stays on, then (although possible) its unlikely that both door switches have failed. Unfortunately, the door switch is built into the latch. I don't know how to get to it (never tried). Sometimes its not an outright failure, but the switch needs to be cleaned or adjusted.

The monsoon unit should stay on until the door is opened and, depending on the unit, an aftermarket unit may stay on for a period of time. Some units will run for a short time after the ignition is off. It's not like it no longer is receiving power just because the key is off. It is a battery saving feature.

It could be wired wrong but a properly wired stereo may operate when the ignition is off for a limited time. The fact that the time is limited is the battery saving feature. It is impossible to tell from your posts if the hu continues to run indefintely (until battery failure). If it does, it is wired wrong. Some hu will run until a predetermined time and then power off. Again, the battery saving feature I was talking about.

to answer your question... Its wired wrong. That simple. Sounds like hes got the remote wire ran into a constant hot wire (wire that stays hot 24/7). either that or its another wire.. usually there are 2 wires that require power.. a red and a yellow. Been a lil while since Ive wired a a HU, but Ive had the same thing happen to me and I pretty much had to trace down which wire looses power when key was shut off.

Even if the door switch is faulty, the hu should turn off in time. I've sat in my car listening to the radio after I turned the car off and before opening the door. After maybe five minutes the radio will shut off.

For me its closer to 10min. Also, the poster didn't mention whether or not they waited that long.

Wait a minute VIP. You replied to my comment saying that it was like that before he ever touched the Monsoon... now your saying he never said he didnt wait that long. I reread this whole post of his and not once did he ever say the radio shut off when the door was opened. which is it? What I gathered from his post is that his friend installed a NEW HU and now it wont shut off period unless he hits the power button. I still believe he gots it wired wrong.
