In a turbo stalled auto set up what can you do to the tune to get the best spool in a launch? I hear people talk about how the tune can affect spool but don't know what direction to go to test.

get a lpe two step and pull timing when its activated, best way to spool imo

You would want to add timing down low to spool a turbo faster. The more power an engine makes the faster the turbo will spool up...

Read closer, its an automatic not a 6 speed.

To aid spooling, you will want the A/F to be mid to high 12s and the timing to be 32-35+. On our big motor we run 40 degrees of timing and 12.7:1 A/F. Each motor will be different I test alot of different combos and track the turbo speed to figure out which one works the best.

So you run 40 degrees? What kind of timing do you run at 100kpa and into the first 3-4lbs boost?

I run 38 degrees @ 6-7# of boost on the transbrake, its 40 at 0 to 2psi.

Talk about bad info. Autos need timing.

Here is a good thread http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/sh...ghlight=3+step

What I gathered: You want high timing to help the motor produce more torque down low to get up on the converter. Once you are up on the converter and building boost, if you have a 3 step you can activate the trans brake. Once on the trans brake you can retard the timing to build even more boost if your chassis will support it.

With a 6 speed you can retard the timing to help spool the turbo while on the 2 step. Similar to how guys are retarding the timing on the trans brake. Obviously with a manual you do not need extra low end torque to get up on a tight converter.

One of my turbo buick chips had a launch assist feature - it would pull timing and dump fuel in the motor - I could peg the boost gauge (30psi) almost instantly. EGT's would go through the roof. Times have changed - but the buick guys have a ton of cool info - check out DonWG's anti-lag system. 224ci and 91mm turbo http://www.youtube.com/user/DonW21G#p/u/4/WYsqF88qCvQ

I bumped up the timing table and smoothed, left the numbers for high boost & rpm the same.

Do a couple test, measure the boost from known points(1.0 to 4.0) and see the time differential change with different tunes.

I agree with Phil about the testing - every setup is different.

I don't do much drag tuning on the LS1's anymore, but on the little 4-banger turbos the trick to a quick spool is pulling a chitton of timing. However, it is a balance between the car falling on its face and building boost.....which is why I agree with testing.

I would constantly be trying to turn the timing down though during testing.
