Question Royal Purple ... Why do many dislike it?

Let me start out by saying that I did a search for Royal Purple on this forum for issues that would discredit Royal Purple and I can't find a single sound argument against it other than folks complaining about it's cost. Which I find amusing because if you order it from EBay online, 6 quarts will run $51.79. It's not enough to seriously break the bank IMHO. ... So, with that said, I'm looking for an honest to goodness reason why many put down Royal Purple.

If there's truth to this, I wonder what the story behind that is.

Extremely high shearing compared to other synthetic oils suggests that it's not good to use long term.

RP claims a 5 HP gain just for using it

I actually tried royal purple for the first time my previous oil change. I won't use it again. Didn't notice any power difference (not that you can really feel 5hp anyway) and my "change oil" light came on way before 3,000 miles..

That's irrelevant. You need to reset the light.

I haven't had a problem with it, but I'm switching back over to Amsoil next oil change.

Are you switching back due to RP's cost or is there another reason for your desire to swap back?

Amsoils more expensive than RP, so it's not the cost. Ha.

I dont believe that Amsoil has the ASE certification on their bottle either...

But, from the tests I've seen, Amsoil is a better oil.

I dont blame you. I actually didn't know that before I posted this thread. That's kind of the answer I was looking for. ...

So there's one good reason aside from cost. Any others guys?

$9.75 plus shipping if there's not a local dealer around you, which there isn't to me.

Here is some real life results with Royal Purple. I liked the stuff, and had no problem paying for 6 quarts every 1,000 miles or so (weekend warrior). However, it was hard to overlook the rapid oil consumption from my car. Ls1? Sure. Over 115k miles? Yeah. Were those the reasons? Not so sure... After a year and a half of having to add another quart of RP every 500 miles, i figured i needed to experiment. So i tried thicker viscosities, modified pcv with several configurations, etc. Same results. I had been told numerous times about the premature break down of RP along with other things probably found on google, either way i decided to try a different oil.

I changed over to mobil1; problem solved. Well not completely of course, because i do have a 115k ls1 that does consume a little oil. But i'm not having to load up a 1.5 quarts between oil changes anymore.

Conclusion: is Royal Purple bad?? I don't know. Maybe others have had better results, maybe with different powerplants.

Is Mobil 1 better?? I don't know. I just know I don't have to replenish it between oil changes. And i've heard similar stories except with people changing to Castrols and other oils in synthetic forms.

I realize this may not be a sound argument, especially not from any scientific method involving complex breakdown of molecular properties among oils. It's just what happened in a real life experience.
