Question Blown Valve Seals?

Last year sometime I remember reading an article that if you have a cam that has greater than .550 lift with stock rockers that it wears down the valve seals faster. Now I need to search for the article. But any ways my cam has lift of .588 and .595..

When my car idles, it blows out what I think is oil and man does it smell (see my vids). My cam has prolly about ~7k easy miles on it.

So are my valve seals going? And what could that smoke be?

EDIT: here is a similar thread to mine from last year.. Everyone things valve stem seals or worn valve guides. Still trying the post about the cam vs. rockers

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...e-exhaust.html

found my dyno vids from last year where you can clearly see the blue smoke

I think you meant worn out guides not seals...

stop worrying your car was most likely smoking cause it has been sitting all winter and got condensation...

Thats not it Chris.. Trust me as Rob knows how bad it smokes. And you can see it in the vids. What you see in the vid is what happens in real life. It smokes like that even in June or July

Pull a few spark plugs and see if their is oil on the threads. Typically this means your valve seals are bad or are no longer seated; allowing oil to come down the valve.

........And if they are, it's not difficult to change valve seals. IDK, about lift causing valve seal failure. If the geometry is correct, the valve moves similarly to a valve w/stock lift. However, this is done more easily using after market roller rockers. You're talking about stock rockers. Stock rockers have a wider pattern & it may be wide enough w/ higher lifts to cause guide wear & possibly seal damage. They are also known to come apart & drop needle bearings. That's why I always use after market rollers w/higher lift cam.

All that said (sorry a little long) the videos don't look that bad. Smoking on deceleration can be an indication of valve issues, but, you were on the dyno. The smoke could have been fuel or oil from the pcv system dumping into the intake.

If you are concerned that the valve seals are bad, then change them & install roller rockers w/ confirmed correct pushrod for a narrow valve wipe pattern. This way you can be sure that the valvetrain is set up as well as can be. Good-luck

You know I really couldn't tell ya as I only put about ~1,500 miles on the car a year. For the most part when I get gas I always check the oil dip stick and it is always in the safe portion. Couple I've added maybe 1/8 of quart...
