Default Do cams lower the life span of the ls1 engine

I am putting in a cam in the near future. I plan to install a cam kit from thunder racing with Single Valve Springs, an average cam, comp cams 26918 valve spring,a nd thunder racing pushrods (7.40). My question is how long will the valve spring and the rest of the internal components last with a cam installed. Will the internal components need to be replaced sooner or can the ls1 handle it? My car is a 99 formula with 84,000 miles.

what is the lift on the cam you are putting in. if it is over .600 I would check the springs every year, and most likely change them out every other. If it is over .625 I would just change them out every year.

A lot of the new cams have a lot of lift which is good for power but not so nice on the top end if you don't keep an eye on it.

You will hear stories of people running so and so cam for ever on the springs, it is the internet.

Do you research and you will be happy- the cam will not really cause the motor to wear out too much faster- unless you install it wrong.

You dont have to change that frequently. Just check them.

Yes because you will not be able to maintain self control and keep your right foot out of that newfound power You can take that to the bank

Like said, just check them. I went 2 years on my Crane dual valve springs and 10k miles with a .644 lift before they started wearing. What is the lift on the cam? I'd suggest going to double valve springs if the lift is near the .600 mark.

Comps will be ok if the spec's are around there and the lobe profile isn't agressive.

If you are still on the fence about a cam I would go to EPS and have a custom one ground. Those lobes are powerful and not too bad on the valvetrain.

this might be a stupid question, but what exactly do you do to check the valve springs? are you just inspecting for cracking lines or is there some kind of spring compressor tester to test their resistance capabilities?

This.

Cam is harder on the bottom end since you will be spending more time at the upper end of the tach.

Y2K Z28 daily driver...heads/cam bolt ons...makes 452/418 and just turned 212,000 miles on the 2010 Hot Rod Power Tour...car has uses a half quart of oil every 2500 miles its whole life...these LS series engines will obviously last a very long time if they are maintained properly.....

I am looking at EPS 226/234 113 not too sure on the lift yet. I came across this thread about this cam and its reliability and quiet valve train https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...234-113-a.html. Would this cam still provide me with some lope or is it not even going to sound like I have a cam? If anyone has some audio or video of this cam or similiar can you post? Thanks

You use a valve spring pressure tester to check the spring pressures at the installed height your using while they are on the car.

You will hear a small amount of lope with that cam I bet, it will be more choppy/rough than radical per say.

It has 4° of positive overlap, so if you can't tell that cam is in there then you need your ears checked. Has the same amount my 228r has. I can hear the heck outta this cam too!

^^Yep.

Did my H/C swap with 103,000 miles on it. Still had factory cross hatchings in the bores too. Car now has 150,000 miles on it & runs like a champ. I daily drive it 300+ miles a week & romp on it daily.
