I don't think it ran dry. I think you sucked something into it. How does the pickup look?

Also what was the application of the car? RPM?

Built 427 based on wet sump LS7 block.. Dedicated road race car, less than 8 hrs on engine but lives only in the top half of the RPM range.. Pick up and o-ring all looked good. This engine was rigged with external oil pressure regulator and allways had a high freq. chatter that I thought was the regulator but guess it was the pump.. Going dry sump.. After going thru the engine for a cleanup that is......

Never heard of an external regulator. Was it mis-aligned, or did the constant pressure create a hydraulic lock that caused it to burst.

It was a Mellings pump... rigged with the internal regulator blocked, the oil exits the block at the left front gallery plug, goes to ext. regulator-filter-cooler, then back in the block at the rear gallery plug..
