Default turbo with TH400

converting a turbo car to th400. but wondering what companies do you prefer? right now it is GT4202 on a stock LS1 right now i was thinking of 3000 stall as the car is street driven a bit and will not have lockup anymore. just wondering what everyone's company reccomendations and what stall would be a good compromise for a street/some track time car.

Give FTI a call. They built my TH400 and the converter. They do converters for cars that are 2500hp, so I think they can handle it. Also do a search for Trakday on here. He has one of their TH400 converters in his twin turbo stroker GTO.

call a good converter place and they will set you up with the right converter. if they do not ask alot of questions about your setup, then hang up the phone. they will want everything including stroke, cam specs, displacement, everything.

Neal Chance is def the biggest name in race converters and their price shows it. A lot of turbo guys including myself like PTC. Chance quoted me $1600 for their weld together which was a bit above my budget. Ended up going PTC for $950 and absolutely love it.

For my trans I'm running a TH400 built by Rossler. Have 200+ passes on it now and 4000+ miles of street driving. Still works like new and I've only had to change the fluid three times.

^ My exact thoughts. You could run a built 60e at those power levels. What are the future plans for the car? If they just plan on sticking with a stock engine and the 4202 why even bother?

th400 is not very streetable, it is a 3 speed auto and i think it would get a little annoying on the highway, yes it all depends on the rear end ration and all that but a 4 speed auto like a 4l60e would be a better street tranny.

there is a forged 408 in the works. but still not in budget. so for this year the customer would like to drive it somewhat reliably. i am not a fan of 60e. and trying to build an 80 is a bit more money.

as for th400 don't know why it would not be streetable. it has 3:50 gear in rear. the old setup was 456 with t rex cam so the customer is used to higher RPM cruising.

I don't mean to break your heart, but the th400 is perfectly streetable, you just need to think outside of the box when dong the setup. I cruise 70mph at 2400 rpms. Thats about the same as a 4l60e car with a 3.23 rear end... in overdrive.

For those wondering about my Rossler trans I think it's a level 2, but don't remember. Base model was $1200 but ended up being $2000 shipped after adding the speedo setup, trans brake and keeping the 2nd gear intermediate band (for safety since finish most of my races in 2nd gear).

it all depends on the rear end gear you use.

Call PTC, or look for a friend of ours on this board named Dusty Bradford. He races EZ street and will take care of you on a PTC convertor. For the price, they can't be beat IMHO.

Since its a turbo car, chances are the rear gear ratio is going to be fairly highway friendly..

you can add 2.75 first gear in the 400, will help with street gears in the rear, but their limited to around 800 flywheel hp, and costs around $600 for the gears
you can build a 4l80e on a budget, if you use a manuel v/b, (unless you have a computer now)and build the trans yourself, for about the same money as a 400
