You're asking about the torque on the NUTS, not the STUDS, right? Two different specs.

are you sure about that. my buddy torques his studs then the nuts holding the heads on. i cant remeber the spec. but i beleive if they are hand tight they can come loose. Again this is just my opinion.

They will not come loose. As it has been stated the studs are hand tightened into the block.

I could give two ***** of the when/where/why/how of your friend or the reasoning. The fact of the matter is head studs only need to be hand tightened into the block. If you don't understand why then educate yourself instead of arguing your opinion.

Head studs are always just hand-tightened into the block. Not every person who builds engines for 20 years knows everything.

just for some info on head studs or any stud for this matter.......the idea of a stud is to pull on the threads on the bottom of the stud...this is where the pressure gets distributed to.......they will not back off becuase of the pressure pulling up on them from the nut.......also another advantage is when they're being torqued the part in the block isn't spinning it simply being strethed........

the correct way is to put the stud in by hand.....when it stops turning you stop turning.....do not tighten them as much as you can by hand just stop when they stop.........use sealant on the end in the block and moly lube on the nut on the top.....also do not go straight to the 70ft/lbs......run three tightening sequences in the correct bolt pattern order 35lbs...55lbs....70lbs.....this will lay out the gasket nicely and give you a better chance at a good seal...........also THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! !! if the studs are NEW install the heads and torque....start the motor and allow it to come up to temp then shut it off and let it completely cool then retorque the studs.....this only has to be done with brand new studs but make sure you do this....espically if you are running a metal layer gasket such as a cometic

hope this helps!!
