Cause its a 99 and the temp got below freezing.
There is a TSB on it. You could have it replaced
but theres a good chance you'll get one with
fingerprints on it-not joking.
Just live with it, I do.

This happened on my car. Then I got the battery replaced. Didn't happen
any more. Then it started happening again. Then I lost all electrics.
Turned out to be a loose connection on the negative terminal. Tightened
that up, trip odometer doesn't reset anymore.

what year is yours?
there is a specific TSB on 99's about
the trip reseting in subfreezing temps.
Yours sounds unrelated

k, my 99 was doing it when the weather was cold. Did it last winter, then not that I can recall over the summer, then started happening w/more frequency this winter. I had read on here about this happening when temp fall to around freezing and battery amperage is also low. This was happening EVERY start for the last month. I replaced the battery a few days ago and it hasn't happened since.

Also, yours is probably doing this too, but fwiw, everytime the trip would reset at startup, the needles did a full sweep across the guage, like someone had hit the reset button on all the guages.

My gauges do that sometimes too.
They read dead then go to the max then
settle to normal.

Mine is a 99 as well. Once I replaced the battery and tightened
the terminals good, no problem.

My car sits most of the winter, only start it and let it run for a 1/2 hour, then it sits again.the temps have been in the teens or lower every night. So you guys think i should replace the battery or just live with it?Like I said it never happens in the summer.

Seems awfully strange that GM would put out a
TSB about needing to replace instrument clusters
and fix them under warranty if they didn't have too.
Also odd that if it is just a loose connection why is
it so common on 99's and not seen very often at all
on the others.
Not saying the battery thing didn't work, I'll guess
I'll find out sooner or later.
My cars sits for days or week at a time and fires up
with no problem. We had a two week stretch with
the high under 20 degrees.
