Default DO NOT try this at home . . . AKA my BUILD thread :)

Imagine if you will, a pair of guys inside a large cavern of a garage, hovering atop the engine bay of an 01' Camaro. Engine block visible between them, begging for reconstruction... If the temperatures are sub-freezing and you're attempting to test your p-t-v clearances, DO NOT use the 'tootsie-roll' method. Now, before you say "Duhh!", an effort to thaw the tootsie-roll to ensure it's soft was made. Microwaving the candy before placing onto the face of the piston worked just fine. It's the time between placing it, dropping the piston in the bore, installing the lifters, heads, pushrods . . . . Once the heads were cinched down and the engine rotated, a unique shatter/crack sound was heard. I didn't take pictures (sorry), but just imagine loads of little brown shards floating around in the bore....

Vacuuming was promptly commenced, lots of acetone followed by blowing it out and then re-oiling the bore. . .

Next up, modeling clay!!!

How about a space heater blowing hot air on the motor from the bottom?

i think you just put put the piston in upside down, now didnt we learn from the FORD 4.6 modular motor that we don't install pistons upside down...

I didn't know tootsie rolls are used for that. Modeling clay will work much better.

Alright... UPDATE with less embarrassment and pictures!

In another effort to obtain initially said PTV, I searched Walmart and found no clay. I did find silly putty and that wall-stick poster stuff thats very similar to clay. Both have no rebound properties that I could find so, I started with the wall-stick poster stuff...

Cleaned the piston face again, just to make sure there was nothing to interfere with measuring. Assembled it again with a pair of pushrods, 4-bolts for the #2 cylinder cinched tight, installed the rockers (1.82 ratio) and rotated several times.

Net result is nearly 1/4" clearance! I thought it was a bit much, so I did the test again and got the same results.

This is the same piston face I've got a pair of valve dimples in using stock cam and stock springs... guessing a missed shift when I initially bought the car caused it (discovered a few months ago during disassembly).

Guess i've got the clearance I wanted

I find it interesting that the tootsie roll actually froze. I guess I've never been anywhere cold enough to have a point of reference though.

This reminds me of trying to use JB Weld outdoors in the winter. Within seconds of being in cold weather, you suddenly end up with a dark brown rock lol.

Lunati 55008 spec'ed to .595/.595 237/242 but mics at .600/.601 with 1.7 rockers. I forget the exact, but w/the 1.82's I think it's about .642/.643.

Yeah... it was either in the teens or singles in my garage... IN the garage

is your lifter being compressed when you turn the motor over? I would think that cam would be a little closer to the piston. A lot of times people will use a "test" spring on the valve that is weak so it doesnt compress the lifter.
like so....

^Thats what I would use, always check PTVC with a solid lifter or checker springs

Alright, I've spent a few hours here and a few there working on preparing this car for everything I want done. I've routed the cable for battery relocation, degreased and scuff sanded (some wire brushing too) of the k-member, lower control arms and painted them.

Original. . . . :

Now. . . . . :

Went with a dark metallic grey I like the contrast of with my black car.

Wanted to do a degree check on the camshaft (Lunati 55008) and didn't like the prices on degree wheels!!! Made my own

Got my dial gauge ready to go

I've retitled this thread my 'build thread', so enjoy, suggest, criticize and encourage at will! ! !

there is no way you have that much clearance with that cam...you cannot use a regular lifter unless you have a checker spring...you collapsed the lifter when checking...you have to use a solid lifter and adustable pushrod when using the dual springs

you will be around .060-.070 with stock unmilled 241s and that size cam using stock gaskets...

and tootsie roll ha, just go to a craft store and get clay...or better yet get a dial indicator and you don't have to mess with that stuff
