Default NE1 remove the plastic grill on the SS hood opening?

I was thinking about removing the plastic piece that is in the hood scoop on my 99 SS. Looks to me that I removed it you could get a lot more air in there. Anybody done this? Any problems asociated with this?

The grill is proably there to keep little animals out. When you suck a hamster through your lid don't say I didn't warn you.

.... I wonder if the knock sensors would pick that up...

That was one of the first appearance mods I did . I've had it that way over a year and haven't had any problems with it. It looks a hell of a lot better too.

I don't see how that grille can restrict air flow at all. When you take it off there is a chance that you might break the tabs off the grille but who cares. Behind the grille you might want to touch up the black paint looking stuff that is back there. It looks kinda disgusting if you don't touch it up.

How about painting that part of the scoop so it looks something like this:

I was looking to do the same thing on my pewter SS. I'm probably going to try this weekend. If we get it out, does anyone know if we'll be able to get it back in? I've heard of some that the tabs break off

I don't think it would hurt any thing I have had mine out for 8 months but some of that time there was no a filter there or tray! Even if a leaf got in it wouldn't make it throgh the filter!!

Hey...thats my idea!! I think the hood would sweet with area painted or a decal on it. I have already looked around and no shop makes a decal for it. Only way to go would to get it painted, but I havent gone to a shop yet. Someone needs to make a billet version of that scoop, but it is suppost to be a royal pain in the ***!

i took mine out to paint it, it broke, and i never put it back in. ive had it like that for over a year now with no problems. you cant really even tell its gone unless you get really close to look at it.

Just to let ya'll know... the SS hood is not very functional at all. at best it is just a cold air intake (on cold days). The air that is supposed to be rammed into the airbox travels through many passages and gets heat up along the way so it loses the ram-air effect.

So taking out the grill will help airflow into the hood but not the airbox. The gains will be negligible. Just get a FTRA and you'll be done.

If you do remove the grill, I think you should paint the area behind it flat black. That'll look coo.

Anything looks better than cheap plastic.

i popped mine out to paint it, and have taken it out like 4 times since to redo it, its not hard, press hard on one side, it will fall in, then remove, easy as hell to put back on, id do a cpl coats of whatever color u want, along with a cpl clear coats, i redo mine every 3 months or so depending on how many bugs it gets tagged by
here is a pic, u can see it decent if u save it and zoom in, i did mine silver
