Default Is an aftermarket oil pump necessary?

My friend is doing a cam/spring/timing chain swap on his l99 camaro, would it be worth it to upgrade to an aftermarket oil pump? Thanks guys!

You can't just throw any pump on those L99's unless he's converting to an Ls3 IIRC they have a bigger pump already due to all the oil it must pump to the dod lifters etc etc. if you can use any Ls pump then I'd get a melling pump. Only because your going in there so why not upgrade to a better one.

Just my .2

The following is a graph of the flow of the stock LS oil pump versus three Melling oil pumps. If you aren't going to increase the load on your main bearings, rod bearings, and piston shirts, and you aren't going to turn the motor over 6,200 rpms you don't need an improved flow oil pump.

Good post. One of the few times I've ever seen actual evidence-based information posted.

I wonder if those numbers for the LS pump in the graph would sustain longer if ported, or if its just a simple volume problem? Eric L

Hi Pumba,

Do you know who and how those data were generated?

The oil pump flow data was provided to me by an OEM oil pump supplier - Identity withheld at their request.
