hole in block just curious, but is a 3 inch by 1 inch whole in the side of your block about an inch above the oil pan on the passenger side a bad thing?

If that "whole" (as you spelled it, meaning "complete") is similar to a "hole" (as in a void that should be taken up by the aluminum of your block) then it sucks. If you mean you have a whole motor, good. It's better than a partial one.
Just teasing. That sucks man. But I'll agree it was probably a blast tearing it up.
