best non stalled cam?
2001 a4 ws6. pacer longtubes ory. prc springs and hardened pushrods. which cam would be the best with 3.42s? its a daily driver. it doesnt have a stall and i want to keep it that way as long as i can. will the tsp 233/239 cam produce enough down low to make up for not having a stall? theres a car around here with the ms3 and 373s running 12.3s on street tires. so i thought about that too. but i want driveability too.

those are both WAY to big for a stock stall. With a stock stall you're gonna want a hot cam. You're going to want a 3800+ stall, you'll have to make the stall decision after making the cam decision, and that is for the auto section.

never said that, what I'm saying is that cam will not work with the stock stall converter. Throw a higher stall converter and an MS3/4, 233/239, and you'll be very happy, why do you want to keep the stock converter?

because right now the motor/trans have never been seperated. I.E. no leaks, no problems, etc. id like to keep it that way considering ill be driving it back and forth to college. what is the stock stall speed? the 233 cam starts the power band at like 1900 if i remember right.

Any sponsor on this board that does installs will make sure it doesn't leak. I don't understand why you think something is gonna leak? Do you think the converter or tranny pan is gonna leak or what? ALSO, I have the TR 230/224 111 lsa cam & I had it installed when I had a 3400rpm converter & 3.23s and that cam was still too much for the converter. I now have a 4400rpm converter and the combo is nice. That cam your lookin at would be REDICULOUS on a stock converter, you'd probably wear out your brakes so fast just tryin to stop the car!
And for what it's worth, I have 70,000 miles on my car, mostly because one year i commuted to college. I've had my converter changed twice, & tranny rebuilt twice so that's 4 times it's been pulled. I just don't understand the whole leak/problem thing you mentioned. It's really a NON issue

A higher stall for an auto is like long tubes, you need one for the car to function properly with a larger camshaft. It's all about selecting parts that work together to achieve the goals you want. And if that's not enough, there's always that blue bottle

go drive to a board sponsor and talk to them. They will get you set up for what you need to accomplish your goals, not what you think you want.
When you put a big cam in a car with a small stall, your going to have a hard time stopping the car & holding it still. It will really take a toll on your brakes. Plus, you'll have to keep the idle pretty high so you won't hear the cam much. Also, i'm guessing the added pressure will tear up the tranny or converter eventually
To run a 12.3, just get some nice tires, a mild cam, somethin like 222/222 or 224/224 on a 114lsa, & a midsized converter like a yank ss3600. Also, if you want, add some 3.42s or 3.73s to the rear. It will be totally streetable.
My car has to rev to over 2,000 rpm just to start moving so it isn't nearly as streetable.

Me and Mcbay(ter) where talking about this yesterday. He knows that a stock stall with a cam will be no where near optimal as far as track times or total drivabilty goes. I think he was hoping to be able to install the cam and gears over christmas break(we're still in college) and be able save up and wait until summer to drop the motor to strengthen the bottom end and put a stall in it then while we already have the motor out. We will be doing all the work ourselves. You guys don't think it would be drivable until the summer. We've both had plenty of cammed cars ranging from small to big cam cars just never with a auto trans.

why not do the converter first? It's the best choice. A cam & gears is gonna cost around teh same as a converter anyway. Does he just want the sound of a cam or somethin cuz a nice converter gives great performance gains too

Part of the problem with a cam in a stock stall car is idle speed. Big cams like 800 - 900 rpm idle speeds when warm. Cold you'll want even higher idle speed. You'll be fighting that at every stop sign with a stock stall. Something like a 224/224 114 or 220/220 112 can be made to idle at 700 - 750 would be a better choice. The 224 cam and 3.73s would be a pretty good street combo.
BTW, I believe even a 3000 stall would be a good idea before the cam.
