Default Does this sound like a bad fuel pump?

2 days ago my car became hard to start. It would crank for 4-5 seconds before starting. But once started it ran fine. I noticed it doesnt sound the same when priming. This is only from a cold start btw. Warm start its fine. Im not down on power, idle isnt fluctuating. Im going to change the filter, but it was changed less than 4K miles ago. What do you guys think?

Sounds like it. Put a gauge on it and see.

I wouldn't bother with a filter. Just put a gauge on it and see. Autozone might even have one in their loaner program.

Prob the check valve in the pump has a slow leak so every time you go to start it it has to reprime itself. I think it is fairly coming try priming it acouple times first before tring to crank see if that solves it. Also with the gauge you will be able to tell once the car shuts off if it holds pressure or not.

I got a gauge man. Head over to Anaheim tonight and I can check out your pump for you. You can check out my trap door too.

Yea then its your check valve you will be able to verify this once a gauge is on it. You can see how fast pressure is bleeding off mine was almost instant. Sounds like its time for a new pump or you can just live with it like that until it goes out.

I guess it depends on how you start it.. my car I turn the key to run for a few seconds and let everything prime up and stuff, then try to start it.

ok since the filter is out ive narrowed it down to the relay or the pump. i primed the pump 3 times, car started right up. the whine is very faint now. pulled off the vaccum line on the regulator at idle, no smell of gas or trace of gas, so thats out. 2 of the 5 prongs in the regulator are bronze, rather than silver like the other ones, not sure what to make of that. going to replace that tomorrow, see what happens

Did you get a fuel pressure gauge yet?

If the relay was bad, you wouldn't hear the pump turn on at all. Not to mention a failure of the pump itself is much more commonplace than a failure of the relay (due to it's simplicity, it's pretty robust).

Do what everyone else has told you and put a damn fuel pressure gauge on it! No LT1 owner should be without one.

^^Samething I was going to say.. if the Relay was out it wouldn't be doing anything.

Sounds like the Regulator may be losing Vacumm pressure..

I would say unless you have a spare regulator laying around I wouldnt waste my money replacing it. I would replace the pump way before I would replace the FPR. Its been awhile since I read everything but its the stock pump right?
