New Timing Chain-Using Stock Water Pump
Hi all! I am in the middle of doing a heads and cam swap. Need to order a new timing set. I plan on keeping the stock water pump for now. Car will probably around 400 RWHP.
I think I read this one is like a stock replacement but a little tighter:

I know the stock chain is pretty good. Are there any stronger options when using the stock water pump?
Thanks for any input or suggestions!

I've never read of one breaking. I had one with a GM847 cam for 10K miles and it was as tight as the day it was put in. Was kind of weird having so little clearance between the cam and crank gears since the crank gear was oversized. Probably around .030 IIRC.
Friend of mine had a stock timing set with stock internals, slammed on the brakes (with no clutch) and broke his. Car had around 40 to 50K miles at the time it happened.

The Extreme Duty set look like what I was looking for, but I do not think I want to spend that much.
Is it better to runner the bigger sprocket and have the chain a little tighter? It seems like you would want it a little tighter, but I know chains are supposed to have some amount of slack in them. Any opinions?

I've read some threads of folks having trouble with non GM cam sprockets meshing too tightly with the WP drive and they whine. You can run a stock cam gear/chain with the oversize Cloyes crank gear for just a little more $ than the complete Cloyes set you linked.
Link to info on oversize crank sprocket, see post 22 from BOLO.

Anyone have any idea what the difference is between the C-3039 and the C-3228? The gears look different in the pics.

Seems like I have read about more people running the C-3039.
