It’s getting closer. It’s almost here. The next generation Camaro is coming and now we have a bit of dirt on the new car that is set to debut this upcoming year.

We all know that the next generation Camaro will use the same platform as the Cadillac ATS, the Alpha platform. That’s been known for awhile now. However, GM has been mum about whether or not the car would shed some weight with this next iteration.

The Alpha platform chassis in and of itself is considerably lighter than even the most featherweight of the current generation Camaro, the Z/28. With the current ATS wet weight being pegged around 3400 lbs, that already is considerably lighter than the Z/28’s 3800 lbs.

However, that ATS has a lot to offer in terms of luxury and comfort, something that definitely adds weight to the overall car. That being said, the new Camaro could be much lighter than anyone predicted, once all that cushy luxury is taken out.

According to Mark Reuss, GM’s product boss, the next car will be much lighter than this generation and have much more performance. Reuss, speaking with MotorTrend, stated that the next generation SS will have more in common with the Z/28 and ZL1 Camaros of the current generation rather than the SS. Essentially, the Camaro is set to leap frog the last generation, just as the current Corvette has done.

We’re all eager to get our hands on the next generation Camaro, especially after how awesome the Z/28 was. All we have to do now is wait. Let’s hope they spill more information soon.
