2017 Chevy Camaro SS 1LE Lapped Around Laguna Seca

The folks over at Motor Trend have no problem admitting that the sixth generation Chevrolet Camaro is an amazing automobile, which is why they awarded it their 2016 Car of the Year. So it makes sense that a 2017 model would be invited to participate in the group’s Best Driver’s Car competition, where manufacturers put forth their sportiest offerings to see which car is the, well, The Best Driver’s Car.

A quick recap for those who are curious: The standard-issue gen six Camaro SS is fitted with a 455HP/455 lb-ft of torque version of the 6.2L LT1 V8 engine, lifted from the C7 Corvette Stingray. From there, the 1LE performance handling package, which is a crucial box to tickĀ on the options list outfits the Camaro with a heavy duty track cooling setup, including a bigger water radiator; engine oil, transmission fluid and differential oil coolers; big 6-piston Brembo front brakes and 4-piston rears; and the key to all that grip: massively wide wheels and tires, 285/30R20 up front and 305/30R20 out back, that’s a lot of footprint.

Pro driver and Motor Trend’s resident hot shoe Randy Pobst has nothing but adoration for the new 1LE, praising the tremendous front end grip and poised chassis which is well balanced and well behaved on track. Check out his hot lap and live opinions as he rips the SS 1LE around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in beautiful Monterrey, California:
