Twin Turbo Silverado 4x4 LS World Record Holding Truck

Fearsome 1,200 horsepower 4×4 Silverado with twin-turbo LS power puts a hurt on the 1,000 horsepower Tesla Model S Plaid.

Typically, when you think of a 4×4 Silverado, you think of off-roading and work use. Generally speaking, the last thing that comes to mind when the term 4×4 is thrown around is drag racing. It’s quite out of the ordinary to see that term associated with going fast in any way. However, this remarkable truck is far from ordinary.

Featured in a recent episode of This vs. Plaid on the Hoonigan Youtube channel, this almighty Silverado drag racing star goes head to head with the fearsome Tesla Model S Plaid. You know, the one that’s advertised as capable of doing zero to 60 miles per hour in 1.99-seconds and leaves the assembly line with 1,000 horsepower? Yeah, that one. The most remarkable part, though, is which vehicle comes out on top. Let’s dig into what makes this Silverado so ferociously fast.

The video opens with an overview of the truck with Beto from On D Gas racing, the company responsible for this truck.

“It’s an LSX427 on twin 79s, running on the M1 Rossler transmission, three-speed,” says Beto.

Hoonigan co-founder Brian Scotto is quick to point out that the truck has no cooling system whatsoever. Like a dragster, the truck is turned on to make a pass and then shut off afterward. So, it’s never really running long enough to get very hot.

Surprisingly, this monster of a truck is running a surprising amount of stock drivetrain components.

“It’s a regular 4×4. I do my burnouts with two, engage the four, it has a little button, and that’s it…nothing built, no axles, no transfer case (upgrades), nothing like that,” says Beto.

Beto also states that the truck generally makes 1,500 horsepower, but they turned it down to accommodate for the surface the Hoonigan race was taking place on. That being said, 1,200 horsepower is still no joke. Couple that with the 4×4 system putting that massive power down through four drag tires and an experienced drag racing driver behind the wheel, and you’ve got a situation where this Tesla stood zero chance. Make no mistake, either. The Tesla is insanely fast. This really just puts into perspective how fast this brutal drag racing truck is.

The first race sees Beto completely drag the Model S. According to the Hoonigan staff at the finish line; the Silverado put a gap of five car lengths on the Tesla. Ouch.

From there, it only got worse as the Tesla driver, Jonathan Parzivand, opted to take a three car length advantage, with Beto getting the hit in the Silverado. However, Parzivand seemingly grossly underestimated how fast this truck gets out of the hole. His reaction time was remarkably slow, and he wound up taking another colossal loss at the finish line.

“My reaction time was horrible,” admits Parzivand.

Ultimately, this build stands to prove a couple of things. For one, a Silverado’s stock drivetrain components are a lot more stout than most people might think. Second, the almighty Tesla Model S can be defeated with LS power and, finally, both electric and gas-powered vehicle owners can come together for a civilized, fun day of racing. Isn’t that what it’s all about in the end?
