c7 Z06 vs. Hellcat

C7 Corvette Z06 takes on a C6, Fox Body Mustang, and a trio of Hellcats, schooling them with a quarter-mile master class!

The C8 Corvette Z06 gets a lot of attention these days. Due out late this summer, the mid-engined supercar boasts incredible performance specs. But the C7 deserves a lot of love and the C7 Z06 remains top dog with its 6.2-liter supercharged engine. Sure, the normal C8 gets to 60 mph quicker. But those that live their life a quarter-mile at a time know it’s where you finish that counts.

According to Car and Driver in 2015, a Z06 does the quarter-mile in 11.1 seconds at 127 mph. Descended from the LS9 from the previous generation ZR1, the supercharged LT4 makes 650 horsepower and 650 lb. feet of torque. It will lunch on just about anything, including the occasional McLaren. But the one in this video on the Drag Racing and Car Stuff channel must have had Wheaties for breakfast. Taking on a Fox Body Mustang, C6 Corvette, and three Hellcat-powered Mopars, it consistently puts down 10.6 second passes at over 132 mph. That’s a good half-second quicker with a noticeably faster trap-speed.

C7 Z06 Trap Time

While the difference is significant, there are a number of factors that could account for the faster times. First, tires and tire temperatures make a big difference. In each pass, the Corvette driver makes sure the tires are warmed up. The tires themselves could be slicks or something with more grip. Second, altitude and air temperature account for fractional differences. And finally, it comes down to the driver. Reaction times, wheelspin, gear shifts, and throttle usage all come into play. Missing any of those things by a fraction leads to a critical loss of time.

But those details don’t matter. Not when you have the opportunity to watch this Corvette Z06 put on a clinic. Cleanly and consistently launching on each run, times and trap speeds all within a hundredth of a second. Smoking everything in the next lane.
