Used Camaro ZL1 Being Sold for Bottom Dollar, Some Asterisks Involved
Cheap, used Camaro ZL1 has us pondering the risk versus reward factor.
Craigslist is a plague, here at the LS1tech offices. We have bought plenty of cars successfully off of CL, and that has been both a good and a bad thing. This latest find has left the office divided as to whether or not it’s worth the risk.
For sale now on Los Angeles Craigslist is a 2015 Camaro ZL1. This was the last model year for the fifth-gen Camaro, so it features the revised, late-model bumpers and lights. Oh, and it also features a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8 engine good for 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. The ZL1 is the top dog Camaro, so, in addition to having big power, it also rides, stops and corners very quickly. Big brakes, big tires, heavy duty cooling, some aerodynamic upgrades and an upgraded interior are all ZL1 hallmark traits. These cars sold for around $65,000 when new, however, this used 2015 example is listed for just $29,500. Yes, really.
Okay, to be fair, it has a salvage title, the mileage is unknown, and the ad is so brief that this sounds like a phishing scam. However, the seller claims that this ZL1 has been modified to the tune of 700 horsepower, dyno sheet included. Sounds promising. The reason for the car holding a salvage title isn’t stated, but if everything checks out in an independent pre-purchase inspection, this could be an example of cheap speed done even more cheaply.
Should you, or anyone else, buy it? Well, we would like to see that 700 horsepower dyno sheet, and, again, a pre-purchase inspection would be 100% necessary with this thing, but, yeah, this seems like an awesome deal. Contemporary clean title cars are still hovering in the $50,000 range, so this represents sizable savings.
Interested? Well, the ad has been up for 18 days now. Offer $25K and see what happens. Could end up being the deal of a lifetime.
