Chevrolet Teases Unthinkable Speed with C8 Corvette ZR1

Will the twin-turbo 5.5-liter Gemini V8 host a flat-plane or cross-plane crankshaft?

Chevrolet has ignited excitement by releasing a second teaser video for the upcoming C8 Corvette ZR1, set to debut this summer. This teaser, much like the first one in April, showcases the car’s aggressive design but focuses specifically on its center-exit quad-tip exhaust and the distinct sound of its 5.5-liter Gemini V8 engine.

’Gemini’ Easter Egg

Around the 10-second mark of the video, a rocket reminiscent of the one found on the 5.5-liter LT6 V8, codenamed “Gemini,” from the C8 Corvette Z06 emerges from the ZR1’s exhaust plume. This rocket logo and the Gemini codename pay homage to the 1960s NASA space program 1960s NASA space program and its connection to the Corvette brand. The LT6 V8, notable for being the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 at 670 horsepower and featuring a flat-plane crankshaft, now appears to have a successor in the ZR1’s engine.

Center-Exit Exhaust and Turbocharged Hints

Rumors suggest that the LT7 engine, likely a twin-turbocharged variant of the LT6, will continue with the flat-plane crankshaft. The teaser video supports this with its focus on the center-exit quad-tip exhaust, a hallmark of the 5.5-liter V8 powered models in the C8 generation, and the twin vortices depicted, hinting at turbocharged air.

‘Unthinkable’ Speed

The ZR1 nameplate has always signified the pinnacle of Corvette performance, with the C6 being the first supercharged model and the C7 the most powerful at 755 horsepower. Chevrolet’s use of the term “unthinkable speed” raises expectations even higher. Will the C8 ZR1 surpass the current C8 Corvette E-Ray’s 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds or the C7 ZR1’s top speed of 212.49 mph? There’s also speculation about whether it will remain rear-wheel-drive like the Z06 or adopt an all-wheel-drive system like the E-Ray.

Flat-Plane vs. Cross-Plane Crankshaft Debate

The final piece of speculation revolves around the crankshaft configuration of the LT7. Traditionally, Corvette V8s have used cross-plane crankshafts, giving them a distinctive sound. However, the flat-plane crankshaft of the LT6 allows for higher and faster revs. The sound of the ZR1’s engine in the teasers, while not as high-pitched as the Z06, lacks the growl typical of cross-plane crank V8s. This suggests the possibility of a twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8.
