Chevy Camaro to Bow Out After 2024, but What Comes Next?

Chevy Camaro Sixth-Gen Discontinued

The last Chevy Camaro will roll off the assembly line in a few months, but the legendary nameplate isn’t totally dead yet.

Rumors centered around the demise of the Chevy Camaro have lingered for years now, and yet, the long-running sixth-gen model continued to soldier on, regardless. The most recent rumor centered around the Camaro suggested that it would be discontinued after the 2023 model year, and yet, no word from GM accompanied that launch, either. Now, however, the General has officially announced that 2024 will mark the end for the Chevy Camaro – at least as we know it.

“As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee and race fan,” said Scott Bell, vice president, Global Chevrolet. “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”

As one might imagine, the last piece of that last sentence from Bell has caused quite the uproar across the internet, with many speculating about what it means. Is he insinuating that the Chevy Camaro will live on at some point in the near or distant future, with a seventh-generation to follow? Or does it mean that the beloved model will be reborn as an all-electric version of its current self, or (gasp) some sort of EV crossover like the Mustang Mach-E?

For now, at least, what will happen to the Camaro nameplate is anyone’s guess, but it is worth remembering that GM is intent to electrify its entire lineup at some point in the future, though it hasn’t set a hard date for that to happen. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see the Camaro return as an EV of some sort – perhaps as a muscular coupe like the soon-to-be-reborn Dodge Challenger, or maybe as just another crossover in a massive sea of them.

The good news is, those that want to secure their new ICE Camaro in 2024 – which could be the very last of its kind, literally – will still have the time to do so, and GM is also offering a new Collector’s Edition package on the 2024 Camaro RS and SS, as well as a limited number of ZL1 models. As far as what this package entails, well, GM will only say that it will pay homage to the first-gen model, with more info to come when we closer to the opening of order banks this summer.

Otherwise, the very last Chevy Camaro is scheduled to come off the assembly line at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan in January 2024, perhaps marking the end of an era – and maybe, the start of another one.
