Delivery Mileage WS6 Collectors Edition Shakes Up Market Values

WS6

With only 19 miles on the odometer, this is the newest WS6 you could likely buy.

It’s incredibly easy to wax lyrical about the WS6. “Last of it’s kind.” “A modern muscle car.” “They truly don’t build them like this any more.” We knew what we had back then, because the WS6 was never really underrated.

But because of its timing – right in the onset of GM’s financial woes – and the ever increasing amount of competitors from Europe, the final generation of Pontiac Firebird Trans Am never was vaulted to the highest heights. It appears the Firebird may have the last laugh.

We’ve been keeping track of this 19 mile 2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am on Bring-A-Trailer. Just about all of these cars were bought and driven hard (as they should be) but a delivery mileage car sets the barometer for all other low mileage cars of a similar ilk. Granted, this one is also a Collector Edition, and a coupe, and a 6-speed. So in terms of desirability factor, all the boxes are ticked.

Bring-A-Trailer notes that approximately 2,400 Collector Edition models like this one have been made. A hue called Collector Yellow and embroidered headrests sets this apart from other 2002 models. However, mechanical components were identical to other WS6 models. That means you got the handling package, 5.7 liter V8, and a limited slip differential.

With only 19 miles, you’d expect this to be a time capsule. It is. Protective plastics are still over the seats, and on the carpeting. Even the tires are still brand new. Not that you’d want to drive on them.

Already a desirable car to start, bidding began at $54,500. And then a bidding war began. Within the span of 4 minutes, the price shot up an additional $19,500.00 to $65,000.00. That price didn’t meet reserve. While prices for collector and performance cars of this era are going up in value, we didn’t expect a reserve of over $65,000.

That number might be an owner looking to take advantage of a particularly wild market. After all, the selling dealership acquired the car only this year. At the same time, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch of the imagination to see one of these cars going for a very high dollar amount soon. You certainly won’t find another with 19 miles. That’s for sure.
