Is This Diesel Swapped Camaro the Ultimate Burnout Car?

Diesel Camaro

Cranking out nearly 1,000 horsepower and 1,500 lb-ft of torque this diesel swapped Camaro will do burnouts for days.

For some reason that has yet to be explained by science, doing a burnout in a car is tremendous fun. It is messy, loud, and a waste of money, but damn it sure is satisfying. Typically, if you want to do a quality burnout, you want a car with a lot of power. A stock Chevy Camaro is a decent choice for burnout duties. But what if you are not satisfied with just a standard burnout? What if you want the ultimate burnout car? Well, then you are going to want a lot more power. One way to achieve that goal is to drop a new engine under the hood. There are plenty of good engine choices out there. The LS platform can generate big numbers. But what if you are looking for something a bit different? How about some good old diesel power?

That’s right a diesel. The type of engine that you would expect under the hood of a truck but not a Camaro. Well, the crazy folks at Hoonigan, and we mean that in a good way, stuffed a massive diesel engine into a fifth generation Camaro.

When we say massive, we mean it. The engine is 35 inches wide, 39 inches tall and weighs about 900 pounds. The result was the ultimate burnout machine. Captured in all its burnout glory on the Hoonigan YouTube channel is this beast of a machine.

As you can imagine a car like this is not exactly the ideal grocery getter. “It is the most bizarre driving sensation ever. There is like no feeling, its awkwardly smooth. And like one percent throttle equals massive burnout at any speed,” says Vincent Anatra of Hoonigan. That is great for burnouts, but not great if you are actually trying to drive the car.

The goal of this build is to hit over 200 mph. The power is there, but the other part of the equation is traction. It is the traction that needs attention next. To get that traction the team is going to work with BBi Autosport to get the diesel swapped Camaro to reach its full potential. But until that time there is not a better burnout car out there.

Burnout

Before we get to the actual burnouts, we get to enjoy hearing the car get fired up. If you were blindfolded you would think you were standing next to a Mack truck. However, that sound is coming from a Camaro.

“There’s something about hearing this thing idle and looking at a Camaro that is just kind of mind blowing,” says Anatra. Of course, beyond the over-the-top sound is the Prius repellent pouring out of the side exit exhaust when the engine is running. This is a fantastically entertaining build.

Despite wearing 305-millimeter-wide Hoosier race slicks out back, the rubber is easily overpowered. The tires are not the only things overpowered either. There is so much smoke generated that the driver, Dan Sommer, exits gasping for air. And smiling. As mentioned earlier, there is something about burnouts that is just plain fun. So naturally after smoking himself to nearly passing out, Sommer jumps right back in the car and does it all over again. This car is a handful right now. However, if your goal is to eat through tires as quickly as possible, this might be the best vehicle in the world.
