These teaser images caught a lot of folks off-guard as most aren’t expecting a next-gen Camaro to happen.

It’s been rumored for some time that the Chevrolet Camaro was living on borrowed time. And yet, we have yet to hear any official word from General Motors on the future of the beloved model. Regardless, we do know that there will be a next-gen Camaro in the world of NASCAR, and it’s on the verge of being revealed. Thus, NASCAR recently released a few new teaser images of the next-gen Camaro racer, which confused a lot of folks, including YouTuber Lethal Garage.

“I was presented with this photo, which looks 100 percent like it could be a next-generation vehicle. Looks like it could be the next car,” he said. The big tell, of course, is that the car displayed in these images has hood vents. Since GM plans on electrifying its lineup in the coming years, that little detail didn’t make sense, until our host realized what was really going on here.

The main image here probably fooled a lot of people, as it’s quite shadowy and vague. But that’s likely by design. NASCAR is working hard to drum up as much interest around its next-gen racers as possible ahead of the 2022 season and has been showing off camouflaged examples of the car for some time now. As of right now, the cars are past the development phase and moving into tire testing before organizational tests begin.

NASCAR has big plans with these redesigned next-gen racers, as it has worked hand in hand with Toyota, Ford, and GM to make its race cars look more like what we normal folks buy from showroom floors. These images make it a point to demonstrate that by highlighting the Camaro’s front fascia, which looks like a futuristic take on the current-gen Camaro.

These next-gen cars also feature changes designed to improve downforce and aerodynamics, as well as reduce costs for teams. Other notable updates include new six-speed manual transmissions that replace the outgoing four-speeds, centerlock alloy wheels, a rear diffuser, and an independent rear suspension. The new racer replaces the Gen 6 car, which has been in service since 2013.

Sadly, this isn’t quite the next-generation Camaro we’ve been pining for, but perhaps it provides a glimmer of hope that GM will at least consider keeping the beloved model alive for another generation.
