1999 Porsche 911 LS3 Chevrolet V8 Conversion Swap

Sleeper 1999 Porsche 911 up for auction has a bit more power than it came with stock thanks to a cammed LS3 under the rear deck lid.

The Porsche 911 is a car that is synonymous with class and performance no matter what generation it hails from. Perhaps the most iconic part of any 911, though, is the rear-mounted flat six-cylinder engine you find only by lifting the read deck lid or “hood,” if you aren’t hip to Porsche lingo. However, this particular generation of the Porsche 911, the 996, is notorious for a faulty intermediate shaft bearing that can result in total destruction of the engine if it’s not preemptively maintained. If there’s one thing everyone knows about Porsche, it’s that they’re expensive. Not only that, but their parts are expensive. Especially the engine. The 996 is no exception to this rule. A refurbished engine for these can soar right around the $8,000 to $10,000 mark. Which is about the price point you’ll find the GM LS376/480 hot cammed LS3 crate engine. See where this is going?

This 1999 Porsche 911 Coupe is listed for sale on Cars and Bids and ends April 19th. While Porsche LS swaps are getting more common, ones with high-output crate engines still stand alone in their wildness. It features a metallic silver exterior paint job (which you’ll see a lot if you look up 996 911s) and a Boxster red interior.

LS power with stock parts

The LS3 may look a little cramped in there, but it does the job. Impressively, it is mounted directly to the factory six-speed manual transaxle thanks to the conversion kit sold by Renegade Hybrids.

The mighty 6.2- liter LS3 crate engine puts out a healthy 495 horsepower and 473 pound-feet of torque. A massive leap in power from the factory 300 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque found with the boxer six-cylinder.

Inside, amidst the tasteful red interior, you’ll find two Corbeau racing seats, racing harnesses and a half roll cage. Other than these additions and a touchscreen double-din stereo, this 911 is pretty stock inside.

Underneath it has Bilstein B8 Performance Plus suspension to keep the handling characteristics of the 911 alive while safely putting that LS power down. Additionally, it has Eibach springs and sway bars and a strut bar to keep the chassis planted.

Outside modifications include a black Plastidip finish on the factory wheels and a GT2 style wing. Other than that, you wouldn’t know you were looking at such a beast from looking at it. However, when you hear it roar to life, it’s sure to raise the hair on the back of your neck.

You’re looking at a 911, but you’re hearing a Camaro SS. It truly is the best of both worlds.

At the time of writing, the bid on this car was north of $17,000. However, with several days still left on the auction, we wouldn’t at all be surprised to see it go deep into the $20,000 range. All things considered, this doesn’t seem like a bad price at all! Though there’s no way to be certain of the final price, we’ll undoubtedly be watching to see where this goes. One thing we are certain of, though, is that the next owner is going to have a lot of fun with this car.
