Possible C8 Z06 Corvette Spied Wearing a Very Interesting Wing
Heavily-camouflaged Corvette spied testing on track might just be a C8 Z06 mule with many interesting styling cues.
It’s a virtual lock that GM is going to bless us with a C8 Z06 Corvette at some point in the near future. When that might be, of course, is a mystery. Originally thought to come along as a 2021 model, the C8 Z06 could be pushed back to 2022 because of the automaker’s two-month shutdown and subsequent production woes, but no one really knows at this point. What we do know is that this heavily camouflaged C8 could very well be a Z06 mule.
There are several clues here that hint that this is, in fact, a C8 Z06 mule and not another future model like the ZR1 or the rumored hybrid E-Ray. For starters, the front end air inlets appear to be larger than the base C8, and there’s a heavily padded raised section on the frunk, which is a styling feature present on prior model year Z06 models.
The sides of the car are also heavily clad in camo, but particularly the side scoops. This is likely because they’re, well, larger than the base C8, as is the entire rear portion of the car. The purposely covered wheels and tires on this potential C8 Z06 are also much larger than ones present on the base model, too.
Our spy photographer confirmed that the mule is running 20-inch wheels up front. Those are clearly wrapped with Michelin Sport Cup 2 R tires that measure in at 275/30ZR20. The rear wheels and tires are harder to discern. But they are certainly larger and likely 21-inchers for a staggered setup. “The huge rear tires visible on these latest spy shots could definitely be a match for the 345/25/ZR21 rubber rumored for the Z06. The disguised wheels could be hiding carbon fiber wheels,” our spy noted.
Other than those clues, the most obvious styling element on this possible C8 Z06 is that crazy looking rear wing. The photographer likens it to the C7 ZR1 wing in sheer size, and there’s no denying that it’s quite large. Recent rumors suggest that the new Z06 could get active aero, potentially as part of a special Z07 option package. Either way, it’s highly unlikely that this giant wing is active in any way. Well, other than simply grabbing attention everywhere it goes.
One thing’s for sure – whatever this mule might be, it’s something special. Our money is on this being a C8 Z06 prototype of some sort, but who knows? It could very well be the rumored E-Ray or maybe even an early ZR1 mule. All we really know for sure right now is that there are plenty of C8 special editions on the way. We just don’t really know when they’ll actually arrive.
