Pristine 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Hits the Auction Block With 40K Original Miles: Track Time Tuesday
Amazing 40K-mile 1979 Pontiac Trans Am was kept by the original owner until 2019.
While many of us lean toward more modern machines, we also still have a soft spot for the classics, too. This is especially true of the Camaros and Firebirds of the 1970s, fantastic-looking automobiles that were equally iconic in terms of styling and lethargic in terms of power. Regardless, there are obviously ways to fix the latter problem, but we wouldn’t dare LS swap this gorgeous 1979 Pontiac Trans Am that’s going up for grabs at Mecum’s upcoming Harrisburg auction.
We say that because this particular 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is one of the nicest examples on the planet, with just 39,535 actual miles on the odometer. That makes it easily one of the lowest-mile fire chickens we’ve come across in some time, and the fact that it’s in pristine, unrestored condition only makes it that much better, too. If we didn’t know any better, we’d think we had been transported back to the late 1970s after scoping out this amazing ride.
Much of its preservation can be attributed to the Firebird’s original owner, who kept the car until 2019 after purchasing it new in Minnesota. Most everything we can see or touch is original here, save for obvious wear items like the tires. That includes the drivetrain, which consists of GM’s 400 cubic-inch V8 and four-speed manual transmission, which sends power back to the rear wheels via a 3.23-geared Positraction rear end.
The Cameo White beauty was originally equipped with both the WS6 and 72 performance packages, as well as four-wheel disc brakes and no iconic flaming chicken on the hood. It still rolls on its original and iconic 15-inch aluminum snowflake wheels, breathes through its factory exhaust, and even has its original spare tire still intact. Even better, the light blue interior is something that you simply don’t see much these days, but in this case, it looks absolutely amazing.
This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is certainly a rare find, a car that’s in absolutely pristine condition after decades of being loving cared for by its original owner. And when it hits the auction block later this month, we imagine that it will receive the same kind of attention as many bidders look to become the next owner of this timeless gem.
