Retired Chevy Caprice Police Car Out for Some Winter Drift Fun
Watch this old Chevy Caprice PPV rip up icy roads with traction control off in a perfectly timed ballet.
Most people hate winter, and for good reason. In most places, winter replaces sunny, warm weather with dreary, snow and ice-laden terrain that also makes the simple act of driving anywhere potentially dangerous. Then there are automotive enthusiasts like ourselves, who make the best of winter by enjoying the lack of traction out on the roads rather than driving ultra conservatively. This takes skill, of course, and that’s something that the owner of this retired Chevy Caprice police car – known as Ziyad on Instagram – has in spades.
The Chevy Caprice PPV was originally available with a 3.6-liter V6 that produced 301 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, which sounds rather boring. However, this particular example is packing the optional 6.0-liter V8, which was originally rated to produce 355 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Like most police cars, this one also has a fortified suspension with heavy-duty police MacPherson struts in the front, a four-link independent rear setup, and four-wheel disc brakes. That makes for a fun combination, especially since the 6.0 is easy to modify and extract serious power from. The only real limit is the money in your bank account, of course.
As for Ziyad, well, his Caprice PPV looks to be in fantastic condition, but he also doesn’t mind taking it out for some fun in the snow, as is quite evident from his Instagram account. There are multiple videos of him drifting around icy, snow-covered roads, including this one, which shows him masterfully carving his way along, sawing the wheel back and forth with traction control turned off.

It’s a truly entertaining clip, and one that reminds us just how much fun a good old-fashioned V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive American sedan can be. There was a time when these were as common as mile markers on our nation’s highways, though they’ve mostly been replaced by SUVs and crossovers these days. However, we long for the days when old police cars made awesome second-hand hooning machines, which is precisely what this Caprice does best.
