Default 12.52 106 2002 S10 ext cab 5.3L

NOTE:
LM7 5.3 posts 1 - 8
L96 6.0 posts 9+

As the title says, ran a best of 12.52 so far this year (3652 air). UPDATE BELOW
2002 S10 extended cab, 2004 5.3L cam/springs, Vic Jr with 650 DP, FTI 8" converter (too tight), FTI level 4 TH400, split mono, caltracs, 4.11 with spool and MT275 Pro.
Shifting at 6200, doesn't seem to pickup shifting higher, truck is 3450 race ready at the line.
No matter what time I run, 12.8 to 12.5, the truck goes 106 mph, bracket racing.
Q-750-AN carb is on the Fedex truck and I hope to pick up more performance for the rest of the season.
Having fun learning/proving and the truck is actually doing exactly what I planned it to do, I designed it to go 12.5 to 11.5 (bracket racing) depending on the engine, salvaged 5.3 or 6.0 or maybe a crate 6.2 when I know more.
Currently with the 5.3 I met the first goal of 12.5, now to see how much more the 5.3 can do before up sizing.
Plus I need to work on the driver (me).
Thanks to LS1tech, I've been able to pick up a few do's and don'ts.

Mike

update
Worked on the rear suspension and ended the season with a best of 12.41 108 at 3252ft with the 650 carb, 4777-2, shifting at 6200
The new QF750AN will need some tuning next year, made 42 1/4 mile runs this season.
I will increase shift point rpm and have installed a Holley split intake.
Found the solution to controlling the alternator output and will run that mid 14V instead of the default 13.8V
Track has a 2 tenths correction factor which is not reflected in times posted

summit 8708 is in the 5.3

I found a L96 last month and have installed a summit 8704 in that with same induction setup (Holley split) for swap later this summer.
it is on my run stand waiting for pushrods and spring compressor so it could be an interesting season at the track.
But I do want to see if I can get more out of the 5.3 first. This years goal is to run a 12.25

UPDATE June 2022, Pro ET
June 5, 12.29 at 109.49 3258ft (had a tail wind) gained over 100 rpm at the stripe.
Also been blending in a bit of 114 to the SHELL 91 which has helped consistency.
Tires at 20#, timing at 29 total, more has not helped.

End of 2022 season post:
77, 1/4 mile runs with a best of 12.18 @ 109.84 with a 1.65 60' in 4225' air.
I know there are faster guys out there but I'm blown away how good the 5.3L performed.

Made it to 4 finals, which I won two, biggest race was in front of 14K+ fans, Hot August Night, which I won! What a blast we had!!!
2004 5.3L from salvage yard has over 120 1/4 mile runs on it, post season leak down test, valve springs and rockers were perfect.
Truck did better than I expected, 12.5 with the 5.3 was my goal.

Met a bunch of great people throughout the season, looking forward to next year.
Will pull the 5.3L and install a Gen IV L96 6.0L, along with a new converter, 5500+ stall.

End of this thread, hope to be in the 11.90s next year.

Mike

thanks,
Motor is a $800 salvage yard, 2004 LM7, 125,000 miles, summit 8708 cam TFS 2500286 spring kit, 7.425 .080 pushrods, Holley split manifold, 650 Holley
Reused the original timing chain, lifters, stock rockers (I inspect the valve train couple times a year)
Heads have never been removed, has 80 psi oil during the run, 5W30 high detergent oil which cleaned the motor very nice. LOL
Modified the water pump with the universal Moroso motor drive kit, made a custom alternator mount and a controller to control the output at 14.9V during return trip.
1 7/8" turbo headers from Summit

OP,

Thanks for your patronage. It's pretty awesome seeing the abuse that these LS motors will take even in factory form! Curious to see what the SUM-8704 cam does in the 6.0 next season. We could see the SUM-8702 single plane or SUM-8709R1 automotive cam working for this combo

thanks Summit racing
the 8702 was my first choice a couple years ago but was unsure of the PTV clearance and decided to play it safe.
The L96 heavy intake valve is my concern with the 8702 and also the tight convertor, a couple runs will show what i need to up grade in 2023.
My goals are, what can I do with a middle of the road shelf cam? Easy on the stock lifters and rockers.
Sure I can put in what ever nasty lobe, but I want maximum seat time first, I'm bracket racing not heads up.
2023 season with a L96 and around 80 runs will tell me what to do next.
I've had he 8702 sitting in my cart for a couple weeks now, just need a weak moment to hit send.

OP,

With all the variables that affect PTV, it's hard to give you a go/no-go gauge. The only way to know for sure is to physically check PTV. For reference, we previously performed a PTV test on a bone stock LS3. We tested a few of our cams with the following results.

SUM-8708R1 with specs of .600/.600, 232/242, 113+3
- Clearance was Intake .081"/ Exhaust .103"

SUM-8711R1 with specs of .625/.605, 234/248, 113.5+3.5
- Clearance was Intake .076"/ Exhaust .096"

SUM-8709R1 with specs of .625/.605, 238/246, 113+3
- Clearance was Intake .061"/ Exhaust .092"

The 8709R1 was pretty much at the limit of what we recommend for minimal PTV. We recommend a minimum of .060" on the intake and .090" on the exhaust. Now this test was done on an LS3 which has true 0cc flat tops with no valve reliefs. The L96 would have 6.7cc dished pistons with valve reliefs which "should" allow enough PTV clearance with a larger cam than the 8709R1. Not to sound like a broken record but we can't stress enough to always double-check PTV before final assembly.

With that being said, we understand the reasoning for the current combo. It allows you to run a more budget-friendly supporting valvetrain. It sounds like you have a good plan in place with the L96 and our 8704 cam. Get some runs down the track in 2023 and see where you're at. Then proceed from there on what future changes to make. We'll be sure to stay tuned on this thread or if you create a new one make sure to tag us in it

update
The L96 now has the Summit 8702 cam.
During the upcoming T&T weekend (May) I'll run it with the same setup as the 5.3 to confirm the performance increase.
Then I'll tune/upgrade from there.

I ran the 8702 in my Ls2 with single plane and a 850 pro form out of the box carb. I used a cheap 10" 4000 stall and it was perfect.

May 13th T&T with L96
same carb, converter and MSD6014 settings as with the LM7
1st run off the trailer, 11.50 at 117 with a 1.57 60'
stall increased to 5200 compared to the LM7 (4700)
I now need a new harness.....mines out of date
had an issue with the water pump so didn't chance it and packed up after 2nd run
did not expect the 11.50, truck worked great

45 runs later, the L96 is impressive, always dialing in the low 11.40s running 117 mph, crossing the line at 6700.
Modified the water pump with just a restrictor and the temperature control is great, using the old school Moroso universal drive.
Staging at 150F and crossing the finish line at 158F, handling the heat soak on the return road, hot lapping is not a problem so far.
Added the transmission cooling lines to the rad and then into the Derale Atomic cooler to manage trans temp.
I'll update with the final results after the season ends.
I think there is a 6.2 in my future....

End of 2023 season, 1st run = 11.50, Last run = 11.50, Total 2023 runs = 121 (one weekend of 1/8 mile runs)
Typically dialed in the 11.4x, one day dialed in the upper 11.3s, all weather related.
L96 never skipped a beat all season long, post season leak down test was perfect.
5100 stall, crossing at 6750.
Truck has a total of 240 runs, MT 275 Pro radials are done, have 28x10.5 PBR for next year.
Hot lapping/double-enter keeps a guy very busy which is what I want, gathered a lot of data and seat time.
Uploaded a typical day of data, showing rpms, ECT, timing and voltage during the run.
Functionally the truck was flawless, driver not so much, but I had a great time every day.
Never thought salvaged LM7 and L96 engines would be so good, its awesome how they run, cam, carb, stock long block (heads have never been off).
A 6.2L would take weight off the front plus add more power, if I don't find one the L96 is good to go.

Picked up a 2004 LQ9 with 130,000 miles on it, has Gen 4 rods.
First heat cycle on the run stand and the motor was nice and quiet.

update
Installed a Summit 8702 cam, TFS-2500286P spring kit and BTR 7.450 pushrods and it's ready if I need it.
It will be interesting comparing it to the L96 since both motors have same intake, cam, etc.
