Seems to me that they are starting to do to gasoline engines what they have been doing to diesel engines for years.

High pressure injection into high compression cylinders at precise timing almost eliminating detonation. This method will result in a noisy engine, but it is very powerful.

I have heard of this style injection system getting super lean conditions without any effect to the surrounding parts. I hope this technology takes off, especially since they have been talking about it for quite a few years now.

That Transonic company isn't creating a new wheel.

It's called HCCI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homogen...ssion_ignition

They have been around for a loooooong time. It is very difficult to pull off, but with modern high-speed electronics, it is starting to become a possibility. There are still a handful of mechanical/physical issues that need to be overcome before this would ever be in a production vehicle.

Seems like something that would be very vulnerable to component failure. I mean, if the control system or some other part were to fail on a system like that, you could lose the whole engine.

why not just install more sparkplugs in the engine? Would that not help get a mroe complete mixture burn?

Chris.

Not really. Multiple ignition points are just that. A complete burn occurs after the ignition. Compression Ignition and playing with the direction of flame travel/speed would be cool to look into.......

These engines do not have spark plugs...

Think of a diesel motor that runs on gas, that's basically what this is.

What about just injecting a diesel with gas at the point of ignition. Wouldn't that give the same effect?

Default Direct Injection...

Transonic Combustion, havn't had a chance to read the paper but in laymans terms is this the same thing as Direct Injection and compression ignition? If it is then maybe I can help explain some of this stuff.
1. these types of engines do not nessasarily have to be loud, if a pilot injection was used in which a smaller injection from the same nozzle was injected right before the main injection occured then it would soften the blow of the combustion by already having a flame going when injected, modern diesel engines are doing this now and on some of them you cannot even tell that they are diesel or gas.
2. The main reason I think that this has not become widespread despite its benefeits, increased mpg and poweris to inject fuel like a diesel is that gasoline does not contain the lubriciy like diesel does. Widespread manufacturing injectors for this system that would not burn up due to lack of lube or be able to handle the "dirty fuel we use (foreign contaminates, high sulphur count fuel) Its been a while since I have gone over this system so if I made an error please let me know.
I have heard rumors that mitsubishi is testing/making cars in austrailia that have this type of system. So it can be done just need technology to catch up with theory.
